Jewish 'Bedouins' in the Arava

By MOSHE RON

The Jewish News Special
Israel Correspondent

TEL AVIV — His name is
Meir Perlmuter. He came
from Miami. He is 42-
years-old and married.' He
has a daughter and a
grandchild.
He lives in Moshav Ir
Ovot in the Arava near Ein
Hussub. The name is on no
map. It does not exist offi-
cially: But if you write let-
ters to his address, they
somehow arrive.
In 1966 seven adults and
four children arrived in this
place. In spite of official op-

position they put up tents
and started to drill a well.
The authorities did not
agree. If they were Be-
douins well, but Jews?
One day a military-
helicopter landed, "Mayor"
Perlmuter told us. General
Ezer Weizman and
_Yeshayahu Gavish arrived.
They saw not Bedouins but
genuine Jews building their
homes in the heart of the
Arava. They said: "If there
are such crazy Jews, we
should help them."
When Ariel Sharon was
commander of the Southern
District, Ir Ovot was offi-
cially recognized by Zahal
as part of the defense sys-
tem, but the Jewish Agency
and the Ministry of Agricul-
ture refused recognition.
Perlmuter maintains
that with the help of Ariel
Sharon the settlement could
even expand. Today there
are 40 people there, includ-
ing 25 adults. The first
settlers were Americans,
but today there are immig-
rants from many countries
and one Sabra, Avi –Assiog,
who is the director of the
local school.
The settlement is still not
officially recognized by the
state, but is assisted by an
agricultural organization.
Perlmuter thinks that Sha-
ron, now minister of ag-
riculture, will obtain offi-
cial recognition. .
A development plan in-
creasing the number of
settlers to 50 families .(can-
didates are not lacking) has
already been submitted.
The chairman of the col-
onization department of the
agricultural organization
Aichud Hachaklai, Shlomo
Wolf, told us that the best
reason for demanding offi-
cial recognition for the set-
tlement is the fact that it
has existed for 12 years and
everything was done by the
settlers themselves.
The "Mayor" of the set-
tlement told us that the
settlers are working on 80
Dunams, planting to-
matoes, melons and cucum-
bers, though they have
hardly enough water for 40

dunams. They built the
local electricity net them-
selves with an investment
of IL 100,000 and two big
apartment houses.
"The Arava is empty and
we must settle' there,"
Perlmuter told us. His rela-
tionship to Eretz Yisrael is
holy, messianic. According
to his opinion, the Messiah
will not come easily.- You
have to work hard to hasten -
his arrival and one of the
ways is preparing the soil
for settlment in the Arava.

NEW YORK (JTA) —
Hebrew day school teachers -
attending the 27th annual
summer teaching training
seminar sponsored by Torah
Umesorah were urged to
consider taking teaching
positions outside the major
metropolitan centers, ac-
cording to Rabbi Bernard
Goldenberg, chairman of
the executive committee of
the National Society for
Hebrew Day Schools. -
Goldenberg said that, as
of a week before the opening
of the 1978-79 school year,
Torah Umesorah still had
25 unfilled teaching vacan-
cies in day school in -com-
munities of 5,000 to 25,000
Jews in the United States.
