The First In-
ternational Conference on
the Production and Use of
Microalgae was held in the
Palm-Beach Hotel in Acco
last week with the partici-
pation of about 100 scien-
tists from abroad.
A major part of the con-
ference was devoted to the
combined systems : for
wastewater treatment, re-
clamation and algal protein
production that have been
developed by Prof. Gedaliah
Shelef at the Department of
Environmental Engineer-
ing and Water Resources of
the Technion - Israel Insti-
tute of Technology.
This applied research is
one of the most comprehen-
sive in Israel (approx-
imately IL20 million spent
in four years) and was
jointly sponsored by the Is-
rael National Council for
Research and Development,
the Federal German Minis-
try for Science and Technol-
ogy and the Technion.

Four plants based on the
Technion system are now
being constructed in
Jamaica and Antigua in the
Caribbean and the UN is
considering using this
technology in plants in
Okinawa, Singapore, Thai-
land and Guatemala. The
equipment for these sys-
tems is produced in Israel by
the Siniaver Co. in Bnei-
Brak.

The system is based on
shallow meandering
channel-type ponds where
wastewater supports the in-
tensive growth of micro-
algae, resulting in the
production of concentrated
"green soup."

The photosynthetic proc-
ess, with efficient utiliza-
tion of solar energy, results
in high quantities of oxygen
released by the algae, which
in turn oxidize biologically
the organic matter of the
wastes. The nutrients are
removed from the effluent
by being incorporated into
the algae, thus eliminating
the possibility of the
effluent causing eutrophi-
cation (excess organic mat-
ter primdry production) of
receiving bodies of water
such as lakes, streams or re-
servoirs.

The algae harvested
from the pond contains
between 40-50 percent
proteins and the yield is
150 tons per hectare per
year of dry matter. This
yield is approximately 50
times that of soy beans.

Following the separation
and drying of the algae they
are pelletized with other in-
gredients and fed to poultry,
fish or cattle. The algae re-
places between 25-50 per-
cent of soy meal with value
of over $200 per ton) in
chi'cken rations and re-

places all fish meal (over
$400 per ton) in fish rations.
Israel is importing ap-
proximately 350,000 tons of
soy meal per year just for its
poultry industry and ap-
proximately 50,000 tons of
fish meal per year.
Experiments carried out
at the Technion's Depart-
ment of-Food Engineering
and Biotechnology, as well
as in the Volcani Institute,
showed that the algae can
safely replace soy meal in
chicken feed with a benefit
of better yellow color of the
egg's yolk which is required
by the European market.
Following the separation
of algae from the pond water

by flotation, the quality of
the final effluent is very
high and usable in irriga-
tion of most agricultural
crops.
