AJR Seeking Communal 'Advocates' for the Retarded

The Association for the
Jewish Retarded (AJR),
which seeks to inform the
community about the needs
of its retarded citizens, is
looking for volunteers to
participate in a unique
friendship program.
Along the lines of the
widely recognized Big
Brother - Big Sister project,
this "Advocacy program" is
geared toward mentally re-
tarded individuals who des-
perately need the friendship
and caring attention of an-
other person.
Alterman,
Sharon
president of the AJR, said
that there is a long list of
Jewish retarded citizens
who would derive great joy
from having such an "advo-
cate" take an interest in his
or her well-being.
In this program, the
AJR is working with
Ellen Castaldini, volun-
teer coordinator for the
Oakland County Asso-
ciation for Retarded Citi-
zens. AJR Executive Di-
rector Joyce Keller said
that she passes on all re-
ferrals from those who
wish to befriend retarded
persons within the com-
munity.
The latter may be living
at home with parents, in
_ n apartments, or in
their ow
group homes such as the
AJR-sponsored Haverim
Home.
Ms. Castaldini, in turn,
will match up volunteer and
"protege" depending on the
recreational and other
interests they share. She
suggested that the volun-
teer need not have any ex-
perience working with re-
tarded persons as long as he

or she is willing to give two
to three hours a week.
Their hours together can
include recreational activi-
ties, tutoring, or learning
such skills as budgeting or
preparing nutritional me-
als.
Ms. Castaldini em-
phasized, however, that
once a warm relationship
is established, the re-
tarded person comes to
rely upon these contacts.
The advocate must be
willing to sustain their re-
lationship.
The rewards are great.
For the "protege" - most of
whom attend school or work
- they is friendship and an
opportunity to develop
skills and responsibility.
For the advocate, there is
the feeling "that comes with
being needed - and loved,"
said Ms. Castaldini. -
She added that those who
may not feel comfortable in
a one-to-one relationship
may volunteer their serv-

ices as tutors or drivers to
take retarded persons shop-
ping or to doctor's appoint-
ments.
Volunteers of all ages -
especially men - are
needed, she said. There is a
brief training program to
acquaint the participant
with the problems of re-
tarded persons and ways in
which the community can
help them.
Mrs. Alterman is
encouraging synagogue
groups and organiza-
tions to participate in the
advocacy program--by
sponsoring sports or
other special events, ar-
ranging Jewish holiday
Observances, or assisting
the residents of group
homes for the retarded.
She added that at
Haverim Home there is
ample opportunity for such
activities.

A soothing tongue is a
tree of life; but wild words
break the spirit.

The Association for the
Jewish Retarded will hold
its first general meeting of
the new year 8 p.m. Thurs-
day at the Ten Mile Jewish
Community Center.
Southfield attorney Joel
M. Shere, a member of the
board of the. AJR and the
Jewish Vocational
Service-Community Work-
shop, will discuss estate
planning, a subject of par-
ticular concern to parents of
retarded persons.
One service of the AJR is
to help parents in their deci-
sions how? to provide for a
retarded son or daughter
after they are no longer able
to do so. Governmental pro-
grams, such as Social Secu-
rity and Supplemental Se-
curity Income for handi-
capped adults, are among
the alternatives which will
be described.
The public is invited.
