•MR. LEONARD J. J. DAVIS
. . . IN HIS ASSESSMENT OF

.9 NEW ORLEANS (JTA)
— Racial slurs against Jews
by heavyweight boxing
champion Muhammed Ali
have drawn an angry re-
sponse from leaders of
Jewish organizations. One
said Ali earned the title
"champion bigot."
Ali raised the commotion
with comments at a news
conference Monday about
an argument between two
black promoters of his
heavyweight title fight and
the promoters' white
partners.
"Crooks are everywhere,"
Ali said. "Why are they
picking on some niggers?
Why do only big Jews and
big shots make all the
money? To the Jew and
white people money is god.

Ali's comments; as
printed in a local news-
paper, drew a swift re-
sponse from Donald
Mintz, a New Orleans at-
torney and leader of the
area Anti-Defamation
League of Bnai Brith. He
said, "All well-meaning
persons must respond
with shock and revul-
sion" to the Ali state-
ments.

He said the dispute be-
tween the promoters had no
bearing on Ali's comments.
"The uttering of racial
epithets and wholesale de-
nigration of a religious
minority is totally uncalled
for, especially from a public
figure such as Muhammed
Ali," Mintz said.

try units to cross the Suez
Canal during the Yom Kip-
pur War.
Presently enrolled for his
doctorate at the University
of Seattle, Kadir, a Palesti-
nian sympathizer, applied
for a visa through the Is-
raeli consulate in the U.S.

the opportunity to visit

out tomorrow, I will not
hesitate to be the first to
shoot you on the
battlefield," Kadir told
reporters..
Because of his sym-
pathies with opposition cir-
cles in Egypt, Kadir twice
served time in Egyptian_
jails, once under the regime
of the late President Nasser
and once under Sadat's.
He noted that it was criti-
cism from_ the Seattle
Jewish community that he
understood the Mideast con-
flict only on a theoretical
level and that prompted
him to visit Israel.

Israel Accused
of Aiding Shah

NEW YORK (JTA) —
Leaflets distributed in front
of the Iranian Consulate in
Manhattan by members of
the Iranian Students Asso-
ciation, protesting the
Shah's policies in violence-
racked Iran, accused Israel
of providing troops to rein-
force the Shah's military
forces in putting down riots.
Earlier, in Jerusalem,
Acting Premier Yigael'
Yadin termed similar alle-
gations being spread
world-wide as malicious lies
spread by hostile elements.
The anti-Shah uprising in
Iran has cost the life of at
least one Jew there. A
Jewish scholar was mur-
dered in the town of
Mashad.

Reserves Up
Dollar Is Down

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Foreign currency reserves
rose in August by $29 mil-
lion, the Bank of Israel an-
nounced yesterday. The re-
serves now amount to
$1.518 billion. This is the
first time in the last few
years that the reserves have
passed the $1.5 billion
mark.
Part of the rise was
caused by the decline of the
dollar compared to other
currencies. Another result
of the decline was a slight
revaluation of the Israel
pound compared to the dol-
lar,- and uncommon phe-
nomenon in the -Israeli ex-
change market. The dollar
stood last week at IL 18.36.

Abf: Leider

"His insulting remarks
have alienated a great
number of his fans and ad-
mirers, Jews and non-Jews,
who rejoice in his well-
deserved victory (against
Leon Spinks). We think he
owes them all a public apol-
ogy."
David Blumberg, outgo-
ing president of Bnai Brith
International, also com-
mented while he attended
the group's biennial con-
vention here. "It's a pity
that someone with such un-
questioned talents chooses -
to gain attention by seeking
the title of champion bigot,"
he said.
The suit started when two
white promoters Jake Di-
maggio and city councilman
Philip Ciaccio, sued two
local black promoters,
Shermin Copelin and
Donald Hubbard for $1 mil-
lion. Neither Dimaggio nor
Ciaccio are Jewish. They
have since dropped their

suit against the two -black
promoters, but after Ali's
remarks filed a suit against
him for $10 million.
