`No Progress' Is Reported in OHS Strike

A spokesman for the
striking teachers at United
Hebrew Schools (UHS) re-
ported no progress in the
contract talks this week be-
tween the teachers and the
bargaining team for the
UHS board.
The teachers' strike
against the school entered
its second week on Wednes-
day after little progress was
made during negotiations
Tuesday afternoon. A state
mediator was present for

agreed to contract terms
with the synagogue's bar-
gaining committee Monday

At Yeshivath Beth
Yehudah, the 23 secular
studies teachers who are
bargaining with the school
opened formal negotiations
with a school committee
Tuesday evening. Last
week, the teachers set a
strike deadline of 6 p.m.
Sunday, Sept. 17.

teachers said the group re-
ported to work as scheduled

A spokesman for the_
teachers said that the board
increased its offer of a raise
from 21/2 to three percent,
but is continuing to insist
that the teachers pick up
the cost of 30 percent of
their medical insurance.
UHS has paid the full cost of
the insurance in the past.

The net effect would
still be a pay cut," the
teachers' spokesman
said.

The teachers offered to re-
turn to work immediately if
the board would agree to
binding arbitration but the
board refused, the teachers
said.
The UHS teachers called
a public meeting last night
- at Cong. Beth Achim to give
their reasons for the strike
and seek public support.
The strike forced the can-
cellation of last Sunday's
scheduled teachers' insti-
tute sponsored annually by
the Jewish Educators'
Council of Metropolitan De-
troit.
It was reported that Tom
Turner, president of the
Michigan AFL-CIO, is get-
ting involved in the UHS
situation, as he did during a
similar strike in 1972.

60,000 Teachers
Close All Israeli
Public Schools

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Some 60,000 teachers went
on strike Monday morning
shutting down classes for
more than one million
pupils all over Israel who
had begun their new school
year only the week before.
The strike followed the
breakdown of last ditch
negotiations between the
teachers union and gov-
ernment representatives

government is standing fast
on its policy of granting no
• pay raises to public em-
ployes in excess of 15 per-
cent. That policy was re-

Dulzin Critical
of Israel on Aliya
