Some sources ( e.g. Pirke
D'Rabbi Eliezer) trace this
practice to the episode in the
Bible where Moses was
asked to come up to the
Mountain of Sinai a second
time at which time the
shofar was sounded i Exodus
24:12). This was supposed to
have taken place on the first
day of Elul.
The occasion of Moses'
second coming up to Sinai
was to receive the pardon
and reconciliation of the
Almighty after the incident
of the worship of the Golden
Calf. Since the month of
Elul is the month before
Rosh Hashana when
judgement is ordained, and
the Jews annually seek for-
giveness and reconciliation,
the shofar is sounded
through the whole month of
Elul.
It is said that the sound
of the shofar brings on a
serious and penitent
mood in the hearts of the
worshippers. It should
also be noted that serious
days were usually days of
fasting. On fast days the
shofar was sounded as it
is on any day when the
Jewish community finds
itself in trouble.
Many used to fast during
the daytime of all the
week-days of the month of
Elul and so the shofar was
sounded during each of
these days.
