adding words of praise to
each of the names. Thus,
pointing to ex-Attorney
GenerarAharon Barak, the
Premier said, "He is a jus-
tice of the Supreme Court
now," and Carter replied, "I
know."
Sadat, on the other
hand, had strolled off be-
tween President and Mrs.
Carter, leaving his minis-
ters and aides to follow
deferrentially behind.
Sadat, in a speech at An-
drews Air Force Base
enroute to Camp David,
pointedly ignored reference
to Begin, praised Carter for
his "brave and gallant act of
statesmanship" in calling
the summit meeting and
lauded America's full
partnership in the peace
process.
In a clear association of
himself with Carter and an
indirect reference to the
"legitimate rights" of. the
Palestinian people, Sadat
declared, "Together we
shall build a viable
structure for peace on the
solid foundations of law and
legitimacy." He added a
phrase popular in the
United States, "Together
we shall overcome."
Begin, on his arrival at
Andrews, pledged that he
would make "all endeavors
possible to reach agreement
so that the peace process
may continue and ulti-
mately be crowned with
peace treaties.. This is our
mission."

On arriving in New
York Monday, Begin
stated, "We want peace
more than any nation on
earth . . . For the sake of
peace, for our people and
the people of Egypt
whom we wish well . . .
we are deeply interested
in the success of the
tripartite meetings and
shall make all endeavors
possible to ensure that
success."
Begin's remarks at the
airport were brief and he
repeated what he had told
reporters on his departure
from Ben Gurion Airport
earlier in the day. He said
Israel wanted permanent
peace and "to sign peace
treaties with all our
neighbors and bring an end
to all wars that took place
for 30 years in our region."
He also said that Israel
wanted the Camp David
summit to uphold the integ-
rity of President Carter as

Their statement added,
"Since 1967 the cost of liv-
ing has risen 94:5 percent.
Teachers salaries have not
risen proportionately dur-
ing this same period. In fact,
teachers have not been able
to progress fast enough to
even stand still.
"The privilege of being a
teacher, and the personal
satisfaction derived from
making a significant con-
tribution to the transmis-
sion of the Jewish heritage
to young people in this
community, are dearly pur-
chased.
- "More and more, dedi-
cated teachers are being
called upon to carry the
cause of Jewish education
on their backs. Every year
they are being asked to as-
sume a larger portion of fi-
nancial subsidy by accept-
ing less-than-adequate
salaries."

PHILADELPHIA — An
exhibition entitled "The
Living Witness: Art of the
Concentration Camps" will
be hosted by the Museum of
American Jewish History
from Oct. 18 to Nov. 19,
sponsored by the Interna-
tional Conference on the
Lessons of the Holocaust. Its
opening coincides with the
opening of the conference.
Of the 15 artists repre-
sented in the exhibition,
seven died in the concentra-
tion camps, six survived,
and no information is avail-
able about two. Materials
were scavenged and impro-
vised.
Often the artist ex-
changed food for paper or
pen, while prisoners bar-
tered food for drawings,

leader of the free world. "We
in Israel are an integral
part of the free world . . .
We want to preserve liberty
and the international
prestige of the President is
an important factor. For
this reason, too, we want the
tripartite summit to end in
success and in successful
agreements and we want to
reach that agreement,"
Begin said. -
In a live radio and televi-
sion address to the Israeli
people Saturday night,
Begin described the Camp
David summit as
doubtlessly "one of the most
important events of our
time."
He stressed, however,
his belief that it is not the
last opportunity for
peace. "In life there are
never last chances, there
are always new
chances," he said. He
said he was going to
Camp David with "a calm
and confident heart" and
with a peace plan based
on "fairness and justice."
Begin promised to
"stretch out my hand to
President Sadat and say to
him, 'when we met in
Jerusalem and Ismailia,

you said to me you were my
friend. So let us renew that
friendship.' "
He said he has forgotten
the personal insults leveled
against him by the Egyp-
tian news media and
wanted to renew the vow of
"no more war" that he and
Sadat pledged during
Sadat's visit to Jerusalem
last November.
