iThe Best of Everything
LESLIE MOGELL, born
and raised here . . . growing
up in Livonia . . . who will
be the lead dancer on stage.
for Barry Ashton's "Les
Girls, Les Girls," Tuesday
through Sept. 19, at the
Birmingham Theater, is the
daughter of former De-
troiters now living in
Miami, Myrna and Earl
Mogell.
Leslie began dancing
while four years of age at
Julie Adler Studios in Oak
Park . . . and at Harriet
Adler's when seven . . . her
teacher was Marji Deibele,
who now owns Stage Door
Dance Studio on Southfield
and 12 1/2 Mile.
The 5'6" Leslie, featured
with the 17-girl chorus,
graduated Stevenson High
in 1971, moved to Florida
and now lives in California.
"Les Girls Les Girls"
stars Tony Martin and wife
Cyd Charisse.
Owning one of the
largest collections of gold
records in the business,
Martin was born Al Mor-
ris ... started singing for
his mother's sewing club,
but switched to the
saxophone and clarinet
and organized his own
dance band ... A Hol-
lywood agent heard him
sing, and he was signed
by 20th Century-Fox ...
beginning his long
career.
Multi-talented
Cyd
Charisse was born Tula
Finklea, and has appeared
on stage, screen and TV as
actress and dancer,in scores
of musicals . . . Her
nickname was the result of
a kid brother being unable
to pronounce "sister". Like
Leslie, she started her

training early and at age 13
was signed for a European
tour in the Ballet Russe de
Monte Carlo . . . Her film,
debut was in the "Ziegfeld
Follies" at MGM as prima
ballerina . . . which led to
many starring roles.
Opening night of "Les
Girls, Les Girls" is a $100
per couple benefit for the
American Lung Association
. . . also including a buffet
supper, disco dance and con-
test with Tony and Cyd tak-
ing part.
Troupers as they are, we
know Tony Martin and Cyd
Charisse won't mind shar-
ing the applause with our
own Leslie Mogell.
THERE'S A PRETTY
smile and a lot of gracious
efficiency awaiting you
from luncheon waitress
Jozette Grant at Dubbs
Country Kitchen, 10 Mile
and Greenfield.
DAVE WILBORN, the
only living member of the
original McKinney's Cotton
Pickers, one of the great jazz
bands that came into exist-
ence about 1927, has formed
his own group here in town.
The versatile gents play
Dixieland, Latin, Jazz, Pops
and Standards.
ONE OF THE TOP
waitresses in our area, Vir-
ginia Newton at Red
Cedars, Nine Mile and Tele-
graph, served us with a top
ability that certainly marks
her among the supers of our
town . . . Her ever-present
smile and ultra-pleasing
personality made a fine
evening even better.
Popular Bud Sherbow is
the manager now at Red
Cedars . . . where accent is
on red tablecloths, red uni-
forms, dark wood walls,
booths and tables, wrought
iron railing with attached
lamp posts.
Chicken soup was thick
with pieces of chicken in-
stead of being the kind you
get where boiling water is
strained through . . . plus
oodles of celery, carrots and
potatoes.
Our entree of•roiled
fresh pickerel was excel-
lent ... with the sauteed
almonds on the side for
those who don't like it
almondined ... or want
more.
Back to our waitress, Vir-
ginia Newton . . . so ex-
tremely efficient, very per-
sonable . . . and certainly
not lazy as she goes about
the table serving from the
correct side . . . never think-
ing to do the dastardly hor-
rendous thing of reaching
across people.
Red Cedars is a pleasant
place to go . . . dining there
is usually good . . . and
when you get a waitress like
Virginia, the service is tops.
With Buck Sherbow now
managing Red Cedars, it is
even better than before.
