Israeli Doctor
Helena Kagan

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Helena Kagan, veteran Is-
raeli pediatrician and medi-
cal pioneer, died Aug. 21 at
age 88. Born in Tashkent,
Kagan studied in Switzer-
land and graduated as a
physician from Berne Uni-
versity in 1910.
She arrived in Palestine
on the eve of World War I
and abandoned her scien-
tific studies to educate
mothers in basic hygiene
and child care. She later be-
came the head of Hadassah
Hospital's pediatrics de-
partment and was the foun-
der and first charrman of
the Israel Pediatrics Asso-
ciation.
Kagan was a member of
the Yishuv's electoral as-
sembly and the pre-State
Vaad Leumi where she
served as advisor on medi-
cal services.
She was also a member of
the WIZO Executive and
was instrumental in build-
ing the Jerusalem WIZO
babies' home. She received
the Israel Prize in 1965 for
her "special contribution to
the welfare of the state and
society."

Joseph Dunner,
Yeshiva U. Prof.

NEW YORK — Dr.
Joseph Dunner, professor
emeritus of political science
at Yeshiva University who
taught at the school for 10
years and was a key figure
in the development of the
university's political sci-
ence department, died Aug.
24 at age 70.
Dr. Dunner joined
Yeshiva University in 1964
after serving 18 years at
Grinnell College, Iowa,
where he was professor of
political science and inter-
national law.

Archeologist
K. Kenyon, 72

LONDON (JTA) — Dame
Kathleen Kenyon, one of
the Holy Land's leading ar-
cheolOgists, died Aug. 24 at
age 72.
She was best-known for
excavations which showed
Jericho to be the world's
oldest city.
In Jerusalem, where she
was director of the British
School of Archaeology in the
1960s, she uncovered the
walls of the original Jebu-
site and early Israelite
cities.

Mollie Bloom, 80

Mollie Bloom, active in
several Jewish organiza-
tions and a Detroiter for 72
years, died Aug. 25 on her
80th birthday.
Mrs. - Bloom was born in
Russia. She was active in
the Jewish National Fund,
a member of the Yetz-Cohen
Auxiliary of the Jewish War
Veterans and a charter
member of the Ordin Fam-
ily Club.
She leaves two sons,
Mitcheal and Gerald; three
daughters, Mrs. Lillian
'Bernstein, Mrs. Raymond
(Doris) Epstein and Mrs.
Louis (Anita) Dorfman; a
brother, David Ordin; 15
grandchildren and five
great-grandchildren.

Israel Journalist
Philip Ben, 65

TEL AVIV (JTA) —
Journalist Philip Ben died
Aug. 25 at age 65 after suf-
fering a heart attack.
For many years he was
the United States corre-
spondent for Maariv and a
roving correspondent for Le
Monde. Most of his years in
the U.S. were spent cover-
ing the United Nations in
New York.
Bell, whose real name
was Norbert Niswiski, was
born in Lodz. He became a
journalist in Poland before
World War II and when the
war broke out he was re-
cruited into the army where
he published the army
newspaper.
In 1943 he arrived in

Palestine with the Polish
regiment. He remained
there and worked for
Haaretz and Yediot Ac-
hronot. When Maariv
was founded he joined its
staff.

A few months ago Ben re-
turned to Israel to arrange
for his retirement but be-
came ill and was hos-
pitalized most of the time
until his death.

Dr. George G. Fineman, a
Detroit area dentist, died
Aug. 26 at age 75.
A native of Russia, Dr.
Fineman lived 60 years in
Detroit. He was a 1924
graduate of the Temple
University School of De-
ntistry, a member of the
American Dental Associa-
tion and Alpha OmegnDen-
tal Fraternity, as well as its
first chancellor.
He was also a member of
Cong. Shaarey Zedek and
Knollwood Country Club.
He leaves his wife, Re-
becca; a son, Joseph of Los
Angeles; a daughter, Mrs.
Steven (Arlene) Victor;
three sisters, Mrs. Benja-
min (Ruth) Gutow, Mrs.
Isadore (Ann) Gutow and
Geraldine; and three
grandchildren.

Dorothy Woolf

Dorothy Woolf, president
of the Van Dyke Furniture
Co. from 1947-1955, died
Aug. 26 at age 79.
A native of New York,
Mrs. Woolf lived 50 years in
Detroit. She was a Gold Star
Mother and an honorary
member of the Furniture
Club.
She leaves two sons,
Robert and Fred; two sis-
ters, Mrs. David (Ada) Be-
tman and Mrs. Abe (Min-
nie) Levy; two
grandchildren and one
great-grandchild.

Isadore Sparer

Isadore Sparer, 98, foun-
der and owner of Reliable
Food Products Co. in De-
troit, died Aug. 22.
Mr. Sparer was a native of
Poland. He founded his
company in 1938. He was a
member of the Jewish
Community Center and a
former member of Cong.
Beth Abraham Hillel
Moses.
He leaves a daughter,
Mrs. Hyde (Theresa) Leland
of Anaheim, Calif. and five
grandsons.

Israeli Artist

JERUSALEM — Bezalel
Schatz, the Jerusalem-born
painter who founded the
Bezalel Academy of Art,
died recently in Israel at age
66.
Schatz lived in Europe
and the U.S. before return-
ing to Israel in 1951. He was
active in the Israel Artists
Association.
