man Howard Benedict, just
about a Club Berkley fix-
ture all these years, still
does his thing so good ...
Only thing wrong was the
amount of time taken be-
tween sets ... or were we
just too anxious to hear
them play again?
RENAISSANCE LIVE!
draws to a close this
Tuesday when the out-
door concert series hosts
a Detroit Jazz Reunion,
with Ursula Walker and
the Brookside Jazz
Ensemble featured as the
main attraction ... Local
jazz topnotchers have
been invited to "sit in"
and participate in the jam
session.
CAN'T SAY WE haven't
given a lot of people chances
. . . but no one yet beats
Katie Estes at Irving's Deli
on Greenfield and 11 Mile
when it comes to making
eggs of any kind in the
morning ... Closest one is
Paul Donnelly at Benny's in
Oak Park.
NEW MAITRE D' doing
the tableside gourmet cook-
ing at Roman Terrace, Or-
chard Lake and 12 Mile, is
known simply as Mr. Joseph
. . . but he has also managed
restaurants ... owned his
own in France ... and is a
wine Sommelier.
THE BIRMINGHAM
THEATER previews its
first season of Broadway
entertainment this Tuesday
... "Paris Was Yesterday,"
starring Academy Award
Winning Actress Celeste
Holm ... based on the
memoirs of New Yorker
columnist Janet Flanner, or
Genet as she was best
known to her millions of
readers ... It runs through
Sept. 10.
"Les Girls, Les Girls," a
musical revue with Tony
Ma tin and Cyd Charisse,
will open the Broadway sea-
son for season subscribers
on Sept. 12 ... "Les Girls,
Les Girls" broke all
attendance records during
its lengthy Las Vegas run
. . . Opening night will be a
black tie benefit sponsored
by the Women's Committee
of the American Lung As-
sociation, long identified
with the annual Cinderella
Ball.
Curtain time will be 8
p.m., and following the per-
formance an elegant buffet
supper, with flaming des-
serts, will be served in the
theater lobby where there
will be an open bar and
dancing to the music of Jack
Brokensha with Bess
Bonier ... The festivities
will then move back into the
theater and on stage with
the stars and cast for a disco
party ... Highlight of the
evening will feature a disco
dance contest with the win-
ning lady being serenaded
by Tony Martin and the
winning gent dancing with
Cyd Charisse.
All proceeds from the first
evening benefit perform-
ance go to the American
Lung Association of South-
eastern Michigan.
Located In
Holiday Inn of Farmington
"Les Girls, Les Girls will
run through Sept. 23.
ADDED ATTRAC-
TION to the already palat-
able dining attractiveness
at Lelli's, on Woodward
north of Grand Blvd., is the
new addition of an opera
segment by a group of very
talented women and men
every Thursday evening.
Pending customer re-
sponse, it is on a trial basis.
Overcoming the disad-
vantage of being in a corner,
which when one looks
around is actually the only
place available for Dino
Valle, lyric baritone;
Quinto Mimo, dramatic
baritone; Jan Rae,
soprano;
coloratura
Grimshaw
Catherine
Datillo, lyric soprano, and
pianist Chiara Del Guidice,
the performers present a
most entertaining evening
. with offerings from light
operas, operettas and
Broadway shows ("Fiddler
On The Roof" etc.) ... in-
terspersed with interna-
tional favorites. Irish,
Jewish ("This Land Is Ours"
and "Have Nagela") among
a choice selection of rendi-
tions conducive to enjoyable
dining.
The group does solos,
duos and trio singing
with voices we know
would sound better if
they weren't too far back
in an already poor ac-
coustical corner.
Dining at Lelli's is usu-
ally a pleasant experience
... especially now with the
indoor parking . and the
always expert managerial
combination of Jack Wiley
and Vic Dazbaz ... indeed
one of the best.
The antipasto at Lelli's
has refused to give in to
skimpiness because of high
food cost . . . It is still among
the finest ... and would you
believe for two people there
were eight jumbo shrimp
among the other goodies on
their appetizing platter.
We had one of the finest
waiters to serve us in a long
time ... Teo Dosi Perez
(everyone calls him Dosi)
. . . a Lelli stalwart for years
. . . then to another place . . .
and back home again to Lel-
li's where his smiling,
