By RABBI MARC ANGEL Early this century, the Spanish Senator, Dr. Angel Pulido, traveled throughout the Near East and was amazed to meet Sephardi Jews who spoke a Hispanic language. He was awed by his discovery of living rem- nants of medieval Spanish culture and he dedicated Hebrew U. He believed that the ex- pulsion of Jews from Spain in 1492 was a horrible error which needed to be rectified by modern Spain. Dr. Pulido wrote an important book, "Espanoles Sin Patria," in which he described Sephar- dim as Spaniards without a fatherland. At about the same time, the noted Spanish scfiolar Ramon Menendez Pidal generated interest in the Sephardim from other points of view. He and others demonstrated how faithfully Sephardim had preserved aspects of medieval Spanish lan- guage, folklore, music. In Madrid, Barcelona and Granada, small groups of Spanish Heb- raists began to emerge. The Institute Arias Mon- tano was established and began publication of a scholarly journal, "Sefarad." In 1959, the Biblioteca Nacional in Madrid held a major ex- hibition of Sephardica. In 1964, a symposium of Sephardi studies was held in Madrid in which leading scholars as well as Sephardi leaders from throughout the world participated. In recent years, Spain's interest in things Sephardi has continued to grow. Sev- eral volumes of the Me'am Lo'ez, the classic Judeo- Spanish biblical commen- tary, have been published in Madrid by Editorial Gredos in cooperation with the In- stituto Ibn Tibbon of the University of Granada. Two non-Jewish Spaniards, Prof. David Gonzalo Maeso and Pascual Pascual Re- cuero, have transliterated the Me'am Lo'ez from Rashi letters to Latin letters. They have also provided an in- formative introduction and useful notes. • DALGLEISH CADILLAC 6160 CASS AVE. TR 5-0300 1 . ... ‘ m,..1. 1.• •..•• ■•■ 5755 SCHAEFER RD. (1 block North of Ford Rd.)
