SS History Record of Horrors

By ALLEN A. WARSEN

"If the SS existed today it
would be at the forefront of
the anti-pollution drive"
states G.S. Graber, author
of "The History of the SS"
(David McKay Co.), whose
origin he traces to the
paramilitary Freikorps or-
ganized for the purpose of
fighting Germany's
enemies.
The SS or Schutzstaffel
(Protective Squad) adopted
both the Freikorps' political
program and some of its
symbols, such as the
"hakenkreuz" (swastika)
and the German salute
"Heil!" (changed to heil Hit-
ler).
Originally, when founded
in 1925, the main function
of the SS was to protect
Adolf Hitler, the leader of
the Nationalist Socialist
German Workers Party
(Nazi Party) that evolved
from the Deutsche Ar-
beiterpartei (DAP).

On Nov. 8, 1923, Hitler
and his Nazi Party staged
the notorious ill-timed
and ill-fated Beer-Hall
Putsch. Hitler's closest
associate in that ill-
conceived adventure was
Capt. Ernest Rohm,
whose standard-bearer
was Heinrich Himmler.

Significantly, Germany,
in the early years of the
Weimar Republic was
plagued by putsches, like
the rightist Kapp Putsch
and the leftist Bavarian led

by Kurt Eisner, Levine, Toi-
ler and others.
Unjustly, but not surpris-
ingly, Kapp and Hitler re-
ceived mild sentences for
their treasonable actions,
whereas Levine was sen-
tenced to die, and Eisner
was assassinated by the
ultra-nationalist Count
Arco auf Valley. Years la-
ter, the count was shot by
Himmler's SS on the pretext
that he planned to assassi-
nate the Fuehrer.
Curiously, this period in
Bavarian history rightist
historians dubbed "When
Israel Ruled Bavaria."

Following his release
from prison, Hitler reor-
ganized the Nazi Party
and appointed John
Schreck to organize the
Schutzstaffal (SS) to
serve as his bodyguards.
In 1927, he appointed
Himmler as deputy
reichsfuehrer SS and in
1929 as reichsfuehrer SS.

Again in 1933, after his
accession to power, Hitler
appointed Himmler politi-
cal police commander.
Himmler was awarded
these high positions be-
cause his "loyalty to his
Fuehrer was beyond ques-
tion. He would stand at at-
tention and click his heels
when answering the tele-
phone from Hitler's Alpine
residence at Berchterga-
den."
As soon as Himmler be-
came political police chief,
he instructed his men to
treat the Jews as vermin.
Interestingly, at the end of
World War II, the British
sergeant who placed Him-
mler's poisoned corpse (he
committed suicide by swal-
lowing a cyanide capsule) in
an unmarked grave, into-
ned, "Let this worm go to
the worms."
It was Himmler who con-
structed Germany's first
concentration camp at
Dachau. In 1934, with Hit-
ler's approval and Goering's
and Heydrich's connivance,
he ordered the SS to kill the
leaders of the SA (Sturmab-
teilung), including Capt.
Rohm, on the false charge
that they plotted the over-
throw of the Hitler regime.
It is believed that 600 men
then lost their lives. This
savage .SS operation is
known as the "Night of the
Long Knives."

Schools Seek
Yeshiva Grads

NEW YORK — Yeshiva
University undergraduates
applying to professional
schools in the fields of law,
medicine, dentistry, op-
tometry and podiatry were
accepted this year in far
greater numbers than the
national average. Nation-
ally, the average acceptance
rate of undergraduate col-
leges for pre-law applicants
is 30 percent and about 35
percent for medical schools.
Of 43 students applying
to law school, 42 were ac-
cepted.
Thirty-two of 39 students
applying to medical schools
have been accepted, and 15
of 17 pre-dental students.

According to the the 12 tribes of Israel par-
author, people often ask, ticipate and discuss 'ways

The other requirements
were just as "profound." The
candidate, moreover, had to
memorize the SS catechism
that consisted of questions
and answers. For instance,
"Why do we believe in Ger-
many and the Fuehrer? Be-
. cause we believe in God, we
believe in Germany and the
Fuehrer? Adolf Hitler,
whom He has sent us."

Hitler and Himmler be-
lieved implicitly in the au-
thenticity of the "Protocols
of the Elders of Zion." They,
therefore, decided to rescue
the world from the Jewish
conspiracy described in that
fabricated document.
Illuminating is the
author's evaluation of the
"Protocols" whose genesis
he traces to the German
journalist Hermann
Goedsche, who under the
pseudonym "Sir John Re-
tcliffe" wrote a novel titled
"Biaritz" that contained a
chapter depicting a secret
meeting "in the Jewish
cemetery in Prague" in

Impressive is the author's
account of the Kristallnacht

molished synagogues and
7,500 destroyed businesses.

ous Hitler regime was

famous surgeon Sauerbruch
and the existentialist
philosopher Heidegger who
publicly pleaded for an
"understanding attitude."
The author devotes the
final chapter of "The His-
tory of the SS' to his con-
cluding remarks. This is one
of them: "There is no doubt
that many SS men escaped.
Many were brought to trial
and sentenced, and many
were subsequently released
in a short time owing to
their 'good behavior.' . . .
However, there is equally
no doubt that with the pas-
sage of time many members
of the SS found their way
into prominent positions in
public life, a fact greeted
with occasional outbursts in
the German press itself."

Shah's Foes Distributing
Anti-Semitism in Iran

PARIS (JTA) — Anti-
Jewish slogans have ap-
peared on the walls of Aba-
dan and other Iranian pro-
vincial cities according to
travelers who recently vis-
ited the country. The slo-
gans, sometimes virulent in
tone, are believed to have
been painted in the wake of
the recent riots by suppor-
ters of the right-wing Mos-
lem faction.
Some of the slogans say
"Jews out of Iran." Others
blame the Shah for being a
"Zionist stooge" and not
supporting the Arab Mos-
lem cause.
The travelers say that
many members of the Mos-
lem opposition blame the
Shah for "supporting the Is-
raeli cause against our Mos-
lem brethren."
The Moslem opposition is
also distributing illegal
leaflets calling on Iranian
oil workers to stop produc-
ing for Israel. Iran is Israel's
main oil supplier.
Jewish travelers say
there have been as yet no
anti-Jewish demonstra-
tions or acts of violence di-
rected against Iran's 80,000
remaining Jews and that
police units constantly
patrol Jewish inhabited
areas in Teheran and most
of the other main cities.

Iranian Jews are
quoted as saying that
they "have nothing to

fear while the Shah is still
in power" but that their
situation might dramati-
cally change should the
current regime be over-
thrown and replaced by a
strict Moslem junta.

Iran's current ruler, Shah
Mohamed Reza Pahlevi, has
always been friendly to the
local Jewish community
and has encouraged it to de-
velop its religious and cul-
tural activities. The Shah
and his advisors believe the
Jews form an important
economic catalyst pushing
the country on the way
towards economic develop-
ment and progress.
Though Iran and Israel
have no official diplomatic
relations, Israel operates a
large and important dip-
lomatic mission in Teheran
and Israeli experts have
helped Iran in a large
number of fields. The two
countries also maintain
close economic relations.
Exact figures have never
been published to avoid em-
barrassing the Shah.
Iranian Jews recall, how-
ever, with unconcealed anx-
iety, that the situation
changed dramatically over-
night when the Shah fled
the country and was briefly
replaced by a leftwing gov-
ernment headed by
Mohammed Mossadegh 25
years ago.
