Yaacobi spoke at a special Knesset session convened by the Labor Alignment to discuss soar- ing inflation. Pointing to the growth in both the deficit of the trade balance and the state's debts, Yaacobi, a member of the Knesset Economic Committee, said that infla- tion is like a "cancer, caus- ing social destruction and obstructing investments" in Israel. Yaacobi had referred to the 2.4 percent hike in the consumer price index dur- ing July. It was later reported that the Israel cost of liv- ing index rose by a record 54 percent since the Likud government took power. The July increase was contrary to the traditional decrease of prices during the month of July. The main factors in the rise were fruits and vegetables, gen- eral foods, housing and transportation prices. Fruits and vegetables went up 3.5 percent, whereas traditionally their prices go down at this time ofyear, due to ample supply. The only decline in prices were those for clothing and shoes, which were on end- of-season sale. Apartment prices increased by 30 per- cent during the first half of July compared to the prev- ious six months. The mission members toured the country exten- sively, including the Gaza Strip and the new town of Yamit. Arabs Respond to Israel Radio JERUSALEM (JTA) — Patients from Libya, Jor- dan, Saudi Arabia, Syria, and countries of the Persian Gulf have been treated re- cently in Israeli hospitals. The implementation of treatment and the granting of medical advice was made possible through Israel Radio's "The Doctor Behind the Microphone" program, part of the Broadcasting Authority's Arabic- language programming network. This was reported in the new government yearbook's survey of the Broadcasting Authority's activities. Persons from all Arab countries seeking medical counseling have turned to the program in order to re- ceive advice, and some have even traveled to Israel and received treatment in medi- cal institutions here. The yearbook also re- ported increasing interest among the Arab populace living within the "green line" and on the West Bank and Gaza Strip concerning news reports offered by Is- rael Radio's Arabic- language programming. As a result, seven Arabic- language news broadcasts were added in the past year. hi Unusual Han.
