Prof. Stern Wins
High WSU Prize

Prof. Albert L. Stern has
been named the first Dis-
tinguished Service Profes-
sor at Wayne State Univer-
sity "for his work as assis-
tant to the U.S. President in
the development and formu-
lation of national domestic
policy."
Prof. Stern has been con-
sultant to the U.S. Vice
President, the Senate
Committee on Government
Operations, the President's
Council on Equal Opportun-
ity and the Office of
Economic Opportunity.
Most recently he was the
Senior Presidential Adviser
on the President-elect Car-
ter Transition Team. He
presently holds office as as-
sociate director on the
domestic policy staff.
He holds tenure at WSU
in the department of
philosophy in the College of
Liberal Arts.

TIBOR HERDAN

Two noted Israeli concert
singers will be featured at
the annual dinner of Detroit
Friends of Bar-flan Univer-
sity, Wednesday, Sept. 20,
at Cong. Shaarey Zedek.
The entertainers are hus-
band and wife, Stella
Richmond and Tibor Her-
dan. The two are leading
concert-opera stars in Is-
rael.
Miss. Richmond is consi-
dered Israel's leading sop-
rano and has made numer-
ous solo appearances with

the Israel Philharmonic Or-
chestra and the Jerusalem
Symphony. She has also had
many leading roles with the
Israel National Opera
Company.
Herdan has performed in
France, Switzerland, Ger-
many and Austria and be-
came the leading bass with
the Israel National Opera.
He was invited to audition
with the Metropolitan
Opera and was engaged on a
scholarship basis.
David Hermelin, co-
chairman of the dinner with
Irving Nusbaum, reported
this week that
community-wide interest in
the Bar-Ban event is evi-
denced in the prompt re-
sponses and many reserva-
tions already made for the
dinner.

THE SMITHS
Mr. and Mrs. Max (Mol-
lie) Smith of Greenfield
Road, Royal Oak, will celeb-
rate their 60th wedding an-
niversary Thursday.
Married in Detroit in
1918, the couple has a
daughter, Bernice Mendel-
son; two grandchildren and
a great-grandson.
Smith headed the book-
keeping department for
Wayne County for 38 years.
He is affiliated with the Ma-
sons, Oddfellows and in a
member of Adat Shalom
Synagogue.
Mrs. Smith has been a
volunteer for charities be-
nefiting orphaned children.

Topic of Parley

The Detroit Zionist Fed-
eration, in conjunction with
the Israel Information and
Resource Center, will pre-
sent a seminar on "The Role
of the Superpowers in the
Middle East Conflict," con-
ducted by Dr. Zvi Gittle-
man, 8 p.m. Tuesday at the
main Jewish Community
Center.
Dr. Gittleman is associate
professor of political science
at the University of Michi-
gan. He is the author of two
books and has written a
number of articles. He
specializes in Russian and
Israeli politics.
