cluding a "hot line" tele-
phone service, has been set
up in the library of the

its formation will help fill

Volunteers are ur-
gently needed to assist in
the program, Mrs. Jac-
kier said. On Sunday,
during registration for
Jewish Center programs,
the Israel Information
and Resource Center will
be open for visitors and
take names of potential
volunteers to staff the hot
line.
If a question cannot be
answered directly, hot line
volunteers will refer callers
to the source of information
they are seeking.
The hot line number
should be easy to remember.
661-1948. It was chosen to
mark the establishment of
the state of Israel.
In other activity, the
center plans to set up
seminars and workshops
relating to Israel, with
the cooperation of com-
munity organizations
and agencies.
The group already has
co-sponsored one workshop
with the Detroit Zionist
Federation, and on Sunday,
at 8 p.m. will co-sponsor a
second. Prof. Zvi Gitelman
of the University of Michi-
gan Political Science De-
partment will discuss "The
Role of the Super-Powers in
the Middle East" in the
Jewish Center library. The
community is invited.
Another aim of the group
is development of a calen-
dar, listing every ongoing
Israel-related activity in
the community, from clas-
ses to cultural program-
ming.
Success of the center will
depend on trained volun-
teers, Ms. Jackier said. Spe-
cial sessions will be held to
demonstrate the proper
handling of hot line calls, as
well as to provide volun-
teers with the information
they will need to respond to
queries.
Individuals who wish
to participate, and or-
ganizations interested in
arranginga program on
the center, may call the
Israel Information and
Resource Center, 661-
1948.
The center will have its
formal opening in October.

The library facilities also
will provide a valuable re-
source for study and re-
search, and the retrieval
system has already been
streamlined to fill this func-
tion.
As a vital part of its prog-
ram, the center will cooper-
ate with the Jewish Com-
munity Council, Israel
Aliya Center, Zionist
groups and other agencies
and organizations that
program around Israel,
Mrs. Jackier said. When is-
sues arise, the center will be
able to "spread the word"
about planned community
responses and suggest ap-
propriate options, such as
letters to congressmen, par-
ticipation in seminars and
rallies.
