State Dept. Refutes Charge
U.S. Official Linked to Nazis

WASHINGTON (JTA) —
The Soviet government's
renewed allegation that a
high State Department offi-
cial was a Nazi accomplice
in World War II was coun-
tered by the department
with a review of his record
that includes a major award
for frustrating an attempt
by the Soviet KGB at re-
cruiting him.
Meanwhile, the office of
Rep. Joshua Eilberg (D-
Pa.), chairman of the House
Judiciary Subcommittee on
Immigration that is inten-
sively investigating the
presence of alleged Nazis in
the United States, said it is
looking into the matter.
Ten months ago —on Oct.
31, 1977 — the State De-
partment was asked for
comment on a Soviet press
report that Constantine
Warvariv, an American
career diplomat, had
engaged in pro-Nazi activi-
ties in the early 1940s.
Quoting Warvariv as
saying "there is not an
iota of truth to the
charges," the department
added that it had pro-
tested the allegation
through the American
Embassy in Moscow for
"what was termed a bla-
tant violation of the Vie-
nna Convention on Dip-
lomatic Relations, unac-
ceptable harassment of a
U.S. diplomat and gross
interference by the
Soviet hosts with the
proper activities of a U.S.
delegate to a major inter-
national conference."
The reference was to
Warvariv's membership iii
an official U.S. delegation to
a UNESCO conference in

Calendar-Diary
Due for Military

NEW YORK — Jewish
military personnel
throughout the U.S. and at
bases overseas have re-
ceived the 1978-79 Jewish
Calendar-Diary for the
Members of the Military
Community, sent to them
by the National Jewish
Welfare Board in time for
the High Holy Days.
The calendar-diary lists
the major Jewish holy days
and festivals for 5739
(1978-79) and 5740 (1979-
80), provides brief explana-
tions of major and minor
holy days, lists Yizkor dates
and space for an individu-
al's yahrzeit record, con-
tains prayers for times of
illness, after experiencing
danger and for loved ones,
and gives Sabbath candle-
lighting times and weekly

"The note struck in his
letter will be seen as symp-
tomatic of the malaise that
is rife in a particular section
of the Anglo-Jewish estab-
lishment," Bloch wrote. The
reference was to the atti-
tudes of British Chief Rabbi
Immanuel Jakobowitz and
Sir Sigmud Warburg whose
letters criticizing Israeli
policies have recently ap-
peared in the British press.
