Occasion to Cite Rae Sharfman

Rae Sharfman, an ardent
Zionist and courageous
fighter for the Soviet Jews,
will be honored at a special
testimonial dinner 6 p.m.
Sept. 17 at Cong. Bnai
Moshe. She will be honored
for "displaying exemplary
dedication and continuous
generous support of life sav-
ing and far-reaching
humanitarian programs of
Magen David Adom, Is-
rael's Emergency Medical
Service and for her tireless
efforts on behalf of the gal-
lant Jewish activists in the
Soviet Union."
Mrs. Sharfman is one of
the founders of the Michi-
gan Region, American Red
Magen David for Israel. She
is on the executive board
and has played throughout
the years a significant role
in the various activities of
the local chapter since its
very inception.
Born in Windsor, On-
tario, to Russian immig-
rants, she emigrated to the
U.S. in 1949. Mrs.
Sharfman attended Wayne
State University and in
1952 was graduated with a
degree in education. For
five years she taught in the
Detroit Public Schools. The
Sharfmans are members of
Cong. Beth Shalom.

In addition to her ef-
forts on behalf of Magen
David Adorn, Mrs.
Sharfman has a distin-
guished record in the
struggle for the Soviet
Jews. Locally she intro-
duced and promoted the
"adopt-a-family" prog-
ram.

she initiated contacts with
the "refusniks" families in

tion received through these
telephone calls to other ac-
tivists throughout the
world. Mrs. Sharfman has
been information co-
ordinator for the Union of
Councils for Soviet Jewry
and a member of its na-
tional board steering com-
mittee. She was social ac-
tion chairman for the
Michigan Branch of Wo-
men's League for Conserva-
tive Judaism (1973-74) and
was the local chairman of
the women's plea for human
rights for Soviet Jews.
Mrs. Sharfman helped
bring Soviet Jews to the
U.S. through the Detroit
Committee and in coopera-
tion with several congrega-
tions, Beth Shalom, Adat
Shalom and Shaarey Zed-
ek, activists including Vla-
dimir Markman, Luba
Zlotver, Bar Menachims,
Boris Levitas, Jeannette
Mager, Avital Shcharansky
and others were brought to
Detroit. She sends packages
to needy Soviet Jews.

New Programs Will Begin
This Fall in SZ Nursery Unit

The Shaarey Zedek Beth
Hayeled (nursery and kin-
dergarten) has initiated two
programs to begin with the
start of the fall session Sept.
6.
The Perceptual Develop-
ment Center will provide
special experiences and
equipment for children to
understand each of their
senses. The center will act
as a seeing, hearing, touch-
ing and moving clinic.

Shaarey Zedek Beth
Hayeled still has openings
available in its two-, three-
and five-day programs for
children age 3-5. Rosaline
Gilson is director.

Meanwhile, Ms. Gilson
announced that applica-
tions are still begin taken
for the 10-week session
beginning in September
for the parent-toddler
program for parents with
children age 21 months to
3 years.

ceive the "Distinguished
Humanitarian Service

NEW YORK — For the
first time in 21 years,
George M. Elsey, president
of the American National
Red Cross, returned to Is-
rael to revisit Magen David
Adom, Israel's Red Cross
Society.
Commenting on the many
changes and improvements
he observed, Elsey re-
marked that he was particu-
larly impressed with a
"greatly enlarged MDA
with superb buildings and
equipment."
During his stay, Elsey
conferred on many interna-
tional matters with Prof.
Ron Rozin, chairman of the
MDA Executive Commit-
tee, and Prof. Moshe Many,
chairman of MDA's Inter-
national Department.
