KRAMER A Senior Service Corps, comprised of senior citizens whose skills can provide valuable assistance to community agencies, has been approved by United Jewish Charities of the Jewish Welfare Federation. The pilot program, scheduled to be operational this fall, will be under the auspices of Jewish Voca- tional Service Community Workshop. Funding for the demonst- ration program was part of $51,995 recommended by the Jewish Community Foundation and approved by UJC for seven special projects of Federation agen- cies. The UJC's foundation reviews applications for grants to research and ex- perimental projects related to Jewish communal ser- vices. Other projects funded by UJC include a learn- ing disability lab at Camp Tamarack's Silverman Village, a Jewish Festival of Arts at Michigan State University, camp coun- selor training and lead- ership development at the University of Michi- gan, rental of a Jewish student center to serve Wayne State University students, initial costs for the joint Sinai Hospital— Jewish Rome for Aged dental program and a grant toward the estab- lishment of a Michigan base for the Youth Insti- tute for Peace in the Mid- dle East. The Senior Service Corps is designed to keep older adults from becoming iso- lated from the community in which they were once ac- tive by offering them volun- teer slots with Federation agencies. In its initial year, the Senior Service Corps will seek to place 40 senior citi- zens. According to JVS- CW's Barbara Nurenberg, first priority for the volun- teers' services will go to Federation agencies, with other community non-profit organizations being given an opportunity to use the volunteers when additional appropriate and supervised activities can be developed. The primary be- neficiaries of the new prog- ram are the senior adults. Many senior citizens man- age to overcome loneliness and the adjustment to re- tirement by seeking out or- ganizational settings in which to become involved. JVS officials point out that if this ini- tial effort proves success- ful, there is a good chance that a federal grant can become available to con- tinue the demonstration on a larger scale.
