THE CLEANLINESS of
a restaurant in very many
cases, can be told by its re-
strooms.
THERE ARE STILL a
few . . not many . . . who
charge for a second cup of
coffee . . . Nobody would
blame you for not wanting
to go back.
EASTMAN'S LAND-
ING on Orchard Lake Rd.
near 13 Mile, owned by Bev
and Bill Eastman, former
18-year bossfolks at
Eastman's Gaslight
downtown, is fast gaining
the reputation of being fre-
quented by other re-
staurateurs and celebrities.
EVER SINCE ADAM
and Eve were barred from
the Garden of Eden for
nibbling the forbidden fruit,
lawmakers have been out-
doing one another to protect
the public in the prepara-
tion, serving and consump-
tion of food . . Many exist-
ing laws continue to serve
such a need . . . Some,
gathering mold on the sta-
tute 'books, are too out-
moded for modern day liv-
ing . . . Others are ludicr-
ous to the point of disbelief.
In Kansas, for instance,
an old law states that one
must not eat snakes on
Sunday or rattlesnake meat

in public . .. In Houston,
Texas, the law stipulates
that you cannot buy rye
bread, goose liver or lim-
burger cheese on Sunday,
and if you do, you cannot
take it out of the store . . .
An old Los Angeles ordi-
nance states that pickle-
making carried on at any
point within the city limits
where the aroma might of-
fend the nostrils of a pas-
serby, is a violation of the
law and punishable by a
fine . . . In faraway Con-
necticut, on the other side of
the country, it is illegal to
sell pickles which, when
dropped 12 inches, collapse
in their own juice .. . They
must -remain whole and
even bounce.
A Birmingham, Ala., or-
dinance rules it unlawful
for a restaurant operator to
sweep the floor . . . It is
against the law to eat food
while walking the streets of
Northfield, Conn.. . . and
the same ruling applies to
anyone eating while driving
a car in Washington, D.C.
. . In Kentucky, while it is
against state laws for any-
one to sleep in a restaurant,
Lexington has an unusual
ordinance forbidding any-
one to carry an ice cream
cone in his pocket.

• ROLL OR

According to an old De•
troit law, banana peels
are not to be thrown in
the streets for fear of in-
jury to horses . . .

A New Jersey state law
passed in 1929 states that
"no hotel restaurant or din-
ing room or kitchen shall be
used for a sleeping or dres-
sing room by an employee or
other persons." . . . During
wartime, a New York court
ruled that "the defendant
will be restrained from sel-
ling pickles but not from
serving them with meals as
a substitute for butter."
In Evansville, Ind., it is
illegal to sell hamburgers
on Sunday . . . and in
nearby Iowa, it is against
the law to serve food in pool-
rooms or barber shops . .
Des Moines also has a repu-
tation forbidding booths or
partitions in restaurants
. . . In Massachusetts, it is
against the law to eat
peanuts in church or to use
tomatoes in making clam
chowder . . . A citizen may
not carry a lunch pail on the
public streets in Riverside,
Calif.. . . and you must not
peel an orange in a hotel
room anywhere in the state.
