U.S.Warns Israel on Lebanon: Don't Back Christian Militia
WASHINGTON (JTA) —
The State Department con-
tinued to warn Israel
against supporting the
Christian militia in Leba-
non and lashed out at the
militia for resisting
Lebanese army attempts to
take over Christian stron-
gholds.
The Administration did
not criticize the Syrian
"peace-keeping" army's
continued artillery and roc-
ket fire against Christian
areas in Beirut, which has
broughten overwhelmingly
supported resolution in the
House of Representatives to
cut off foreign aid to Syria.
A State Department
spokesman, Thomas Re-
ston, said "obviously" the
department had seen re-
ports that Israel is supply-
ing weapons to the
Lebanese Christians. "We
would be concerned about
the introduction of new
arms in Lebanon," Reston
said, because that would
"work against the defusing"
of the fighting.
Reston said that "a
short time ago," an Is-
raeli "representative"
had given the U.S. assur-
ances that Israel would
not transfer American-
origin military equip-
ment "without specific
approval" to the Christ-
ians and added that "we
have no doubt Israel is
keeping its assurances."
Reston did not identify
the "representative.
He observed, a response
to a question, that the U.S.
has no control over equip-
ment "not subject to U.S.
law or agreement" that Is-
rael may be providing the
Christians.
In a related development,
Major Saad Haddad, com-
mander of the Christian
militia in south Lebanon,
has denied that any ag-,
reement has been reached
to permit a 700-man contin-
gent of the Lebanese army
to pass through the Christ-
ian enclaves in the south to
an assigned position at Tib-
nin, 25 miles from
Kaukaba. The battalion has
been mired in Kaukaba for
a week because of opposi-
tion by the Christian
militia.
Haddad said an agree-
ment was reached on a total
cease-fire between the
militia and the Lebanese
battalion so that the Mos-
lem soldiers in the battalion
would be abel to observe the
Islamic Ramadan feast un-
hampered. He stressed that
the battalion Will not be al-
lowed to move from its pre-
sent site at Kaukaba
through the Christian en-
claves even if Israel, under
United States pressure, ad-
vised them to do so.
But is was reported
that a new plan had been
devised under which the
battalion will take up
positions farther east in
south Lebanon and will
be transported by
helicopter to Tibnin.

Meanwhile,
JERUSALEM (JTA)-
Jerusalem buses under-
went, beginning Tuesday
special security checks, in
order to prevent sabotage
attempts.
The security checks were
introduced following the
work of a special committee
which was set up several
weeks ago, following the
blast in a Jerusalem bus,
killing six and wounding
dozens.
Each bus is now
thoroughly inspected before
going out for a tour. Special
teams approved by the
police will tour the buses
throughout the day. They
are authorized to check pas-
sengers' luggage, as well as
to conduct body searches.
Special signs have been
introduced inside the
buses calling for the pub-
lic's alertness for sus-
picious objects.
'Jerusalem's schools will
have special sessions at
the beginning of the
school year drawing the
students' attention to
possible dangers on the
public transportation
lines. One bus line in
Jerusalem will have
transparent seats which
will make it easier to
trace suspicious objects.
All buses will have mic-
rophones by the drivers'
seats which will allow the
drivers to call for the pas-
sengers' attention for sus-
picious objects.
Meanwhile, a bomb
exploded Monday at a
hitchhike station for sol-
diers on the southern out-
skirts of Jerusalem. No one
was injured and there was
no damage.
An explosive charge went
off Satuftlay on the Mount
of Olives and another
charge was discovered be-
fore it went off near the
Jaffa Gate. There were no
injuries or damage at either
site.

NEW YORK — The first
volume of the Encyclopedia
of Orthodox Biographies is
ready for publication, an-
nounces Rabbi Chaim U.
Lipschitz, editor-in-chief of
the encyclopedia.
Nathan, the peace pilot and
owner of a peace ship, an-
chored his vessel near
Beirut outside the territo-
rial waters of•ebanon.
The ship was loaded with
an ambulance, medicine,
candy and toys which had
been donated by Israeli
Jews, Moslems and Christ-
ians for the Lebanese people
in war-torn Beirut. Before
sailing from Ashdod,
Nathan said that "some-
thing must be done for the
people of Lebanon."
Nathan told Lebanese
journalists who came by
boats from the Lebanese
capital to talk to him and
his crew that the items on
board were meant for civi-
lians, not military person-
nel.
