TEL AVIV — The editors
of the Israeli newspapers,
flew in a helicopter to the
Jordan Valley. We were the
guests of Avraham Orly,
who deals with the adminis-
tered territories in the
ministry of defense. We had
the opportunity to hear
from the Arab inhabitants
about their problems.
Israel-administered ter-
ritories have a population of
one million Arabs. These
territories came under Is-
raeli rule as a result of the
Six-Day War. Israel pro-
vides the Arab population

Two bridges are open for
traffic to and from Jordan
on the Jordan River. We vis-
ited the Allenby Bridge and
could see Arab men, women
and children with their
baggage, visiting their rela-
tives in Jordan and Israel.

People coming from
Jordan and other Arab
countries and their goods
and valises are strictly
controlled. Even during
the Yom Kippur War in
October 1973 these
bridges were kept open
and traffic was normal.
In 1977, over a million
Arabs passed over these
bridges in both direc-
tions and 10,000 trucks
with fruits and vegeta-
bles and industrial pro-
ducts went through them.
The exports through
them reached IL900 mill-
ion.

New roads were built in
order to facilitate the traf-
fic. The terminal was pro-
vided with air conditioning.
The new terminal was built
at a cost of IL25 million.
Nearly 5,000 foreign
tourists cross the bridges
daily.
There are strong security
arrangements; soldiers and
policemen use the most
modern electronic instru-
ments.
Later, we flew to Hebron.
We met the new Mayor
Failed Kawassme and the
members of the Municipal

or 50,000 persons. For years
they did not want to move
from their old barracks.
Now they are living in mod-
ern and comfortable apart-
ments.

About 30,000 Arabs
from the Gaza area are
working in Israel. There
is no unemployment in
this area. The security
situation has improved.
The mayor told us, that There are good relations
during the Jordanian rule between the population
there were 5,400 cars in and the Israeli military
Hebron, today there are authorities. About 6,000
over 26,000. The number of students from this area
tractors increased from 130 study in universities in
to 1,800. Hebron had a Egypt and other Arab
quick development. Today, countries.

Members of the Munic-
ipal Council rejected the
autonomy plan of Pre-
mier Begin and said that
they prefer Israeli milit-
ary rule.

it has a modern agricultural
system with most modern
machines and methods.
There are many new roads,
schools etc.
From Hebron we flew to
Gaza. We passed over the
Etzion Bloc which was de-
stroyed 19 years ago by the
Arab Legion and could see
the huge development of the
settlements of the bloc.
We had a long and
friendly talk with the mem-
bers of the Municipal Coun-
cil. They praised the rep-
resentatives of the Israeli
military authorities. They
told us that they refrain
from intervention in in-
ternal civil affairs and try to
help the local population.
We could see the import
work the Israeli authorities
have done in this area. New
apartments were built 'for
over 7,000 refugee-families,

We also visited the new
Bedouin settlement
Dahanya near Rafiah. Here
new houses, roads, water
and electricity-
installations, schools and
clinics were built. About
120 Bedouin families are al-
ready living in the new
apartments and 60 more
will come in a short time.
The Bedouins quickly
learned modern methods of
agriculture and have an in-
come of over IL3 million.

Schindler Denies
Taking PR Post

NEW YORK (JTA) —
Rabbi Alexander Schindler,
immediate past chairman of
the Conference of Presi-
dents of Major American
Jewish Organizations, has
denied that he accepted a
Premier
request from
Menahem Begin to coordi-
nate public relations efforts
of Jewish organizations in
the United States for Israel.
Schindler said that re-
ports in Israel that he has
accepted are inaccurate. He
said the subject was discus-
sed by him and Begin but
that no decision was taken
by either one.

Worshippers Go
to Western Wall
for Tisha b'Av

(SENIOR CMZEN6
ENJOY

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
The Western Wall was
crowded Saturday with
thousands of Jews lament-
ing the destruction of the
First and Second Temples
as the Tisha b'Av fast be-
gan. The worshippers re-
cited the Book of Lamenta-
tions and mourning prayers
at the Western Wall. The
area of the wall and the
roads leading to it were
guarded by hundreds oi
policemen. Places of enter-
tainment were closed
throughout the country.
Meanwhile, a group led
by Jerusalem City Council-
lor Gershon Salomon at-
tempted to pray on the
Temple Mount Sunday. A
"solemn warning" from
Sephardi Chief Rabbi
Ovadia Yoseph which for-
bids Orthodox Jews from
praying on the Temple
Mount did not deter the
group.
The 30 worshipers, how-
ever, were stopped by police
on their way to the Temple
Mount. But they began
their prayers where they
were stopped.

SMALL BEQUESTS
BUILD A
STRONG ISRAEL

If the tradition of including the Jewish
National Fund in the Will of every Jew were
invariably jbllo wed, sufficient resources would
be accumulated to ensure the future of the
young Jewish State on a sound basis of land
development, social welfare, and justice.

A bequest to the Jewish National Fund
should be as traditional as having a Blue Box
in one's home.

You may want your bequest to be
dedicated to afforestation, to a village, a
Nachlah, to a children's play area, to perpetual
yahrzeit or kaddish, or to some form of
permanent tribute in the names of persons
dear to you.

Consult the Foundation for Jewish
National Fund, 27308 Southfield Rd.,
557-6644
They will gladly co-operate with you in
working out plans to meet your special
requirements, in strict privacy.
