In recognition of Maas'
philanthrophy, the main
road through Tamarack-
Ortonville will henceforth
be known as Maas Trail.
Longtime friends Hiram
Dorfman and Nathaniel
Goldstick said that Mr.
Maas is known as "Uncle
Ben" to the hundreds of
children he has befriended
and helped over the years.
He has been the benefactor
of several institutions in
Mexico that house orphans

Apartment Dwellers Fight
Restrictions in Mea Shearim
By MOSHE RON
The Jewish News Special
Israel Correspondent
TEL AVIV — Some of the
ultlra-Orthodox inhabit-
ants of Mea Shearim in
Jerusalem have organized
themselves against Rabbi
Abraham Haim Roth, who
represents the "Kiryat
Shomre Emunim," corpora-
tion, which has built this
quarter.
The residents of the
apartments have signed a
contract, to strictly carry
out all religious laws. Rabbi
Roth has not registered
these apartments in the of-
ficial governmental register
on the names of their own-
ers. He is afraid that the re-
sidents will not comply with
his strict regulations:
• The owner of the
apartment, his wife and
children will clothe de-
cently according to the cus-
toms of Jews who observe
the laws of the Torah.
Women will not wear short
robes and skirts, which
show naked feet; no blouses
with short sleeves, which
reveal naked arms and
blouses with an open neck
or thin blouses. Women will
only cut their hair accord-
ing to the ordinance of the
holy community.
• Women and girls will
not go in the street without
socks.
• Youngsters will be
educated only in strict re-
ligious schools.
• If one of inhabitants
makes a celebration in his
house, he must refrain from
songs.
• An inhabitant is not al-
lowed to keep in his apart-
ment a radio or television. If
he has records and tape-
recordings of women sin-
gers or non-believers, he is
not allowed to play them.
There were a few other
points in the regulations,
which were abolished re-
cently by a court.
Tenants are fighting in
court the remaining regula-
tions which restrict their
way of life.

TEL AVIV— What does a
diplomat's wife in Israel do
between cocktail parties?
For the past several years,
wives of diplomats
stationed in Israel have
been taking a special prog-
ram in archeology con-
ducted for them by Tel Aviv
University's Institute of Ar-
cheology.
The program of weekly
lectures in English and field
trips enjoys the enthusiastic
participation of 190 per-
sons, including wives of dip-
lomats and foreign jour-
nalists serving in Israel,
members of the Interna-
tional Women's Club, and
guest professors at Tel Aviv
University and at Weiz-
mann Institute and their
wives.
