Warning Issued
on Missionary
Activity in NY
NEW YORK (JTA) —
The Task Force on Missio-
nary Activity of the Jewish
Community Relations
Council (JCRC) has issued
an alert to Jewish educa-
tional institutions, camps,
synagogues, and Jewish or-
ganizations to be alert to a
massive influx of missio-
nary materials aimed at
proselytization within the
Jewish community.
The JCRC reported that it
has received reports from
every borough in the met-
ropolitan area indicating
that Hebrew-Christian
groups were engaging in a
city-wide campaign to con-
vert Jews, according to Dr.
Seymour Lachman, chair-
man of the Task Force.
He reported that it has al-
ready been estimated that
several hundred thousand
brochures have already
been distributed in New
York, and that these efforts
are likely to continue
through the summer until
Labor Day.

Bar-Ilan Expands
Foreign Student
Meshel on Tour
Academic Unit
RAMAT-GAN — Bar-
Ilan, Israel's only religious
oriented university, has
announced the expansion of
its special program geared
to introduce hundreds of
new students from all parts
of the world into academic
studies in Israel.
The Bar-Ilan program is
based on providing a year of
liberal arts studies with full
college credits for overseas
students, as is the custom in
the United States, before
requiring them to
specialize. Other Israeli
universities, it was pointed
out, offer a non-credit year
of preparation before offi-
cially registering a foreign
student.
A summertime Ulpan is
provided for foreign stu-
dents who require Hebrew
language preparation.
Overseas students
from Bar-Ilan hail from
the United States and
Canada, the largest
group-South Africa,
eight Latin American
countries, United King-
dom, France, Germany,
Italy, Sweden, Norway,
Denmark, Russia, even
Singapore and Japan.
While most, except for
new immigrants from
USSR, register for a
one-year liberal arts
program, a sizable per-
centage remain to com-
plete their academic
studies in Israel and
many settle there perma-
nently.
Overseas students from
the U.S., Canada, Au-
stralia, South Africa and
other countries are rep-
resented at the Institute for
Advanced Torah Studies for
men and the Midrasha for
women students which
combine a doubled load of
Judaic studies with their
academic degree-oriented
programs in the various
faculties.
TEL AVIV (JTA) — His-
tadrut Secretary General
Yeruham Meshel is in Latin
America as guest of the
local trade unions.

Israel Legal
Reforms Urged
JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Justice Minister Shmuel
Tamir said he intends to in-
troduce a series of reforms
in Israel's legal system
aimed at a more equitable
administration of justice
and protective of civil
rights.
He said that a new basic
law will be submitted to the
Knesset, possibly when it
returns from its summer re-
cess, that will expand the
powers of the nine-member
Supreme Court.
Tamir said he also in-
tends to propose a bill to
limit wire-tapping by gov-
ernment agencies.
