SHABTAI ROSENNE
Rosenne is on the staff of
the Ministry for Foreign Af-
fairs in Jerusalem. He is
also visiting professor of in-
ternational law at Bar-Ilan.
He was legal adviser of
the Ministry for Foreign Af-
fairs from 1948 to 1967
when he went to New York
as deputy permanent rep-
resentative to the United
Nations. He served in that
post until 1971 when he was
appointed permanent rep-
resentative in Geneva,
where he served until April
1974.
Ambassador Rosenne has
been a member of the Israeli
delegations to a great
number of international
conferences including all
the armistice negotiations
with the Arab states in
1949, and 20 sessions of the
United Nations General
Assembly. He is currently
on the delegation to the
Third UN Conference on the
Law of the Sea.
Ambassador Rosenne has
written a number of books
on international law, espe-
cially on the International
Court of Justice at The
Hague on which he is consi-
dered an authority. For one
of those books he was
awarded the Israel Prize in
1960, and for another the
Certificate of Merit of the
American Society of Inter-
national Law in 1968.
He was a member of the
International Law Com-
mission between 1962 and
1971 and of the Commission
on Human Rights of the Un-
ited Nations between 1968
and 1970 and was vice
chairman of the General
Assembly's Legal Commit-
tee in 1960.
The annual Bar-Ilan
University dinner will be
held Sept. 20 at Cong.
