A major Jewish festival cancels out the remainder of the seven-day (Shiva) or 30-day (Shloshim) mourn- ing period because the commandment in the Bible (Deuteronomy 16:14) which orders every Jew and the Jewish community as a whole to "rejoice" with the festival. It is obviously impossible to both mourn and rejoice at the same time. Public observance of the seven-day mourning period is forbiddenon the Sabbath because of Proverbs 10:22 which states, "It is the bles- sing of the Almighty which maketh rich, and sadness addeth nothing thereto." The "blessing of the Al- mighty" is interpreted to mean the Sabbath, while "sadness" obviously refers to mourning. The inference amounts to the understand- ing that nothing should in- terfere with the public bles- sed atmosphere of the Sab- bath. Mourning in public would indeed detract from the open blessed atmosphere of the Sabbath. The private aspects of mourning still continue on the Sabbath. It is therefore that the Sab- bath does not cancel out the remainder of. the Shiva period in contrast to a major festival which does cancel out the remainder of the Shiva observance. The resolution calls for Bnai Brith to sponsor chap- ters in the four-state area for the recognition of Jewish scholarships and Jewish scholars. The first chapter is scheduled to be established at Rutgers University this fall.
