Anderson Gains Support in Effort to Move Olympics
(Continued from Page 1)
Wallop (R-Wyo.) and
Jake Garn (R-Utah).
Anderson, a 1956 silver
medal winner with the U.S.
Olympic hockey team, told
the Senate:
"We are all painfully
aware of the fact that the
government of the Soviet
Union has recently step-
ped up the pace of its cam-
paign against fundamental
human rights and liberties.
The civilized world has been
distressed by trials of politi-
cal dissidents and American
newsmen and by the
harassment of those who do
not agree with Soviet
domestic and international
policies.
"On Feb. 28, 1978, I wrote
to Soviet Ambassador
Anatoly Dobrynin request-
ing assurances from the
Soviet government that all
qualified nations will be al-
lowed to paiticipate in the
1980 Olympic Games
scheduled to be held in Mos-
cow regardless of political
ideology. Thus far, the
Soviets have ignored this
request.
"Rather, the American
Communist Party news-
paper Daily World says
that the Soviets have
asked the International
Olympic Committee to
'bar hostile reporters of
newspapers, radio and
television that are estab-
lished to destroy the
spirit of peace and
friendship between the
people and the principles
of the Olympic move-
ment.'
the
"Furthermore,
Washington Post reported
that Mr. Victor A. Ivonin,
deputy chairman of the
Soviet Committee for Phys-
ical Culture and Sport, re-
fused to say whether
athletes from Israel,
Taiwan, or other nations
with which the Soviet
Union is not on friendly
terms will be invited to at-
tend the pre-Olympic Spar-
takaide in 1979 in Moscow.
"These negative indica-
tions, combined with the
Soviet Union's current
campaign against human
rights, leads me to believe
that there is little hope that
the 1980 Olympics will be
free from political discrimi-
nation and harassment by
the Soviet government."

Draft Law Adopted
JERUSALEM (JTA) —
The Knesset, after heated
debate, voted 54-45 last
week in favor of a bill that
exempts religious young
women from military ser-
vice merely on their state-
ment that they are obser-
vant.
The bitterly contested
measure was rammed
through by Likud and its re-
ligious coalition partners.

The Knesset debate was
marked by lengthy filibus-

Although religious
young women always
have been excused from

to pass a rigorous screen-

they were, indeed, religi-

was granted.

NCCJ President
Seeking Censure
off' Syrian Troops
NEW YORK — The pres-
ident of the National Con-
ference of Christians and
Jews has sent a message to
UN Secretary General Kurt
Waldheim calling upon him
to take the requisite steps to
censure Syria for its failure
to maintain the peace in
Lebanon.
Dr. David Hyatt cited the
"terrible fratricidal civil
war in Lebanon as the
newest example of what
happens when religious
hatred is allowed to fester
and there exists no respect
for religious pluralism."
The NCCJ president as-
serted that the "killing and
slaughter" of Lebanese
Christians by Syrians "has
assumed genocidal propor-
tions." He also expressed
deep concern about the
"fratricidal warfare bet-
ween differing Christian
groups."
"I am shocked by the fai
lure of the UN Security
Council to take censorious
action against the govern-
ment of Syria for its aggres-
sive, brutal and genocidal
treatment of Lebanese
Christians," said Dr. Hyatt.
