Michigan's lega4 profes-
sion has publicly con-
demned the Soviet Union
for "the violations by the
Soviet government of legal
rights recognized by
treaties" in the case of Rus-
sian dissident Anatoly
Shcharansky.
The resolution was pas-
sed July 21 by the board of

commissioners of the State
Bar of Michigan.
The commissioners urged
Soviet authorities "to take
all steps necessary to insure
that Anatoly Shcharansky
and all others similarly
situated be treated in accor-
dance with the obligations
of international law as-
sumed by the USSR."
The resolution specifi-
cally condemned the
lengthy incommunicado
imprisonment of
Shcharansky before trial
and the denial to him of
counsel of his choice and
a public trial.
The commissioners stated
that the state bar is "most
concerned about promoting
the rule of law in interna-
tional relations, in the in-
terest of all nations."
The resolution was pre-
sented to the commissioners
by Professor Harold Norris
and Gerald S. Cook as
members of the State Bar of
Michigan and as represen-
tatives of the lawyers' com-
mittee of the Michigan reg-
ion of American Jewish
Congress.
Prior to the Shcharansky
trial, six local bar associa-
tions in Michigan had
adopted resolutions urging
that Shcharansky be pro-
vided with counsel of his
choice and a public trial.
The six associations were:

In Washington, two
House committees have
eliminated the Soviet
Union from further con-
sider'ation for special
U.S. government credits
to purchase American
agricultural commodities
because of the trials of
Shcharansky, Alexander
Ginzburg, other Soviet
dissidents and American
newsmen.
Reaction to the trials con-
tinued throughout the
world. The Swiss govern-
ment offered to give politi-
cal asylum to all Soviet dis-
sidents facing trial and ex-
pressed concern that Russia
was violating the Helsinki
Final Act.
The Belgian Communist
party political bureau con-
demned the trials of Soviet
dissidents, and the U.S. and
Britain ordered their milit-
ary pilots to not compete in
a world helicopter competi-
tion scheduled in the USSR.

Mrs. Slepak Gets
'Suspended Term

NEW YORK (JTA) —
Soviet Jewish activist
Mariya Slepak was given a
suspended three-year sen-
tence on the charge of
"malicious hooliganism" in
a Moscow court Wednesday.
The 51-year-old Mrs.
Slepak's husband, Vla-
dimir, was sentenced to
five-years internal exile on
the same charge in June.
Last week his appeal was
turned down. The couple
were arrested after they
displayed a banner from
their balcony demanding to
be allowed to join their old-
est son in Israel. Mrs.
Slepak was released shortly
after her arrest when she
became ill.
The three-year sentence
against Mrs. Slepak would
go into effect only if she was
arrested again on the same
charge, sources said. Mrs.
Slepak told reporters out-
side the court, "This is the
result because my people
are supporting me."
The Slepaks first applied
for an emigration visa eight
years ago. They have a son
in Israel and their youngest
son, Leonid, is in hiding to
avoid being drafted in the
Soviet army.

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
The Israel Music and Folk
Festival opened Saturday
night in the Binyanei
Haooma, in the presence of
President Yitzhak Navon,
Knesset speaker Yitzhak
Shamir, and other invited
guests.
The festival is celebrating
Israel's 30 years of indepen-
dence with musical works
by a variety of Israeli com-
posers and performances by
world known Israeli artists.

U.S. diplomats to avoid
making trips to the USSR.
Approximately 500 U.S
scientists have pledged to
withhold all cooperation
with Soviet scientists to
protest the trials. Mean-
while, Nobel Prize win-
ner Andrei Sahkarov was
reprimanded by the
Soviet Academy of Scien-
tists for scuffling with
police during the trial of
Yuri Orlov. Sakharov
dared the academy to
expel him.

In Mexico City, Jewish
youth and students staged a
demonstration in front of
the Soviet Embassy last
week and the Mexican
Communist Party expres-
sed public disagreement
with the Soviet Union over
the trials of dissidents. It
was the first time the Mexi-
can Communists had disag-
reed in public with the
USSR.

Meanwhile, Soviet au-
thorities reneged on their
promise to Shcharansky's
father, Boris, and brother,
Leonid, that they could visit
him at Lefortovo prison be-
fore he was taken away to
begin serving his 13-year
sentence.
According to the Student
Struggle for Soviet Jewry
and the Union of Councils
for Soviet Jews, Boris and
Leonid Shcharansky ar-
rived at Lefortovo prison
only to be told that they
were "too late."
According to information
relayed to the group by
Michael Sherbourne, a
Soviet Jewry activist in
London, Shcharansky was
removed to the notorious

Vladimir prison, 120 mile:,
from Moscow, shortly before
the visitors arrived.
He was allowed an ear-
lier 20-minute visit, under
close supervision, with
his mother, 70-year-old
Ida Milgrom. It was the
first time he had seen her
since his arrest 16 months
ago.
According to the SSSJ
and UCSJ, Mrs. Milgrom
was kept waiting in isola-
tion for 2k_ hours before she
was permitted to see her
son. The prison authorities
refused to allow her to give
him food she had brought,
which is contrary to the
normal practice.
Her conversation with
her son was repeatedly in-
terrupted by a prison offi-
cial who warned them not to
discuss the trial.
