Senate Candidates Criticize Mayor's Statement on PLO Detroit Mayor Coleman Young's remarks of last week in defense of terrorism are "morally indefensible" according to State Rep. Paul A. Rosenbaum (D-Battle Creek), a candidate for the U.S. Senate. He blasted Young's statement that ter- rorism is "legitimate," say- ing, "The slaughter of inno- cent men, women and chil- dren by terrorists is an un- speakable evil which must not be condoned in any way, whether it occurs in the Middle East, Italy, North- ern Ireland or any other part of the world. "Terrorism is nothing more than a sign of the moral bankruptcy of those who use it, and no public of- ficial in America should ever suggest that it could be anything else." Rosenbaum said he has sent a telegram to Vice President Walter Mondale, in whose entourage Young toured the Middle East, ask- ing Mondale to publicly dis- sociate himself and the Car- ter Administration from Young's statement. Young, an early Carter supporter, has been closely associated with the Administration since it took office and has acknowledged that he was chosen for the Middle East trip because of his ties with it. Violence of any kind to gain - a political end is wrong, Rosenbaum said, adding, "Terrorism has been denounced count- less times by Congress, the United Nations and other organizations as well as the Michigan Democratic Party, of which Mayor Young is presently an officer. "When a close and loyal friend of the Carter Ad- ministration comes home from the Middle East and says he doesn't see anything wrong with terrorism, I think it casts doubt on the Administration's firmness and sincerity in pursuing its announced goals in foreign policy." Carl Levin sent a letter to Mayor Young on Tuesday, saying he was "deeply dis- turbed" by Young's com- ment. "It is not Israel's foot which is on the neck of the Palestinians. Israel has acknowledged repeatedly that the Palestinian prob- lem must be resolved before there is peace in the Middle East, and that the Palesti- nian people must have a say in the resolution of the prob- lem. "It is one small terrorist faction of the Palesti- nians, the PLO, which holds a knife at the throat of innocent people around the world. The terror perpetrated by the PLO keeps the Middle East and the world in turmoil. "Just as a city cannot tol- erate terror on its streets because the perpetrators feel oppressed, so the world cannot tolerate terrorism as a legitimate tool of change, lest the streets and skyways of the world become places ruled by lawlessness and violence."
