family is accepted, at least
in the Western world, we
are a family-centered com-
munity, despite the fact
that our children do not live
under the same roof with
their parents, but in a house
a stone's throw away. We
speak first and foremost
Hebrew, as do our children.
Of course, we have need to
express ourselves in other
languages as well.
Most of us are farmers
and industrial workers,
first generation, and live in
a rural commune. We came
from the big cities and did
not know the difference be-
tween hay and straw, and

from North America, who
come for half-a-year to
work and study Hebrew.
Some of them have set-
tled with us, others have
made their homes
elsewhere in Israel.

The kibutz includes 370
members and candidates, of
which about 60 or more
stem from the United States
and Canada. Most of this
group came in 1946-47,
while in the course of recent
years additional Americans
have made Ein Dor their
home. We are an absorbing
society.
The kibutz has 393 mem-
bers and candidates, 175
children (below the age of
18), 30 parents of members,
35 in the ulpan program and
36 other temporary person-
nel.
The kibutz last year grew
cotton (670 tons), corn, cit-
rus fruits (grapefruits,
oranges, lemons), green
fodder and legumes for sil-
age, wheat and barley, sun
flowers, melons (Ein Dor st-
rain developed in our own
agricultural experimental
station) and chickens (meat
birds).

We have a milk herd of
cows that includes 224
milking cows and 190
calves. They yield
1,852,000 litres of milk.
This was an average of
8,124 litres per milker.
Five years ago our aver-
age yield was only 6,511
litres.

The kibutz, which celeb-
rates its birthday together
with the state of Israel, is
not isolated from the rest of
the country. Its involve-
ment is manifested in vari-
ous ways:
• We provide agricultural
produce and industrial pro-
ducts to the people, as well
as for export (wires, cables,
seeds of melons, citrus fruit,
cotton).
• We are actively a part of
a political party (Mapam)
and relate directly to the re-
gional branches of the party
in our area (Afula, the Arab
villages) as well as in rotat- .
ing positions of leadership
in the central activities of
the party.
• Members of the kibutz
are fulfilling executive roles
in the cooperatives and gov-
ernment and national in-
stitutions, such as the Cot-
ton Board, the Hamabbir
producers
Hamercazi
cooperative, the Water Au-
thority, the Ministry of Ag-
riculture.
• We are involved in absorb-
ing newcomers to the coun-
try and hosting temporary
groups of young people.

Kibutz Ein Dor has
come of age. It is one of
many kibutzim that set-
tled during that eventful
year of 1948 spread
throughout our country.
We are part of the Feder-
ation of Hashomer „fiat-
zair Kibutzim. Seventy-
nine such settlements
have established roots in
the Negev in the south, on
the eastern borders of the
country and in the north
in the Galilee.
