JVS to Move Suburban Office
and Expand Counseling Staff

Community Workshop were
announced by Stuart E.
Hertzberg, president, at the
JVS-CW annual meeting
held last month at the Stan-
dard Club, Renaissance
Center.
Hertzberg noted that the
demand for job counseling

the Southfield office has ex-
ceeded the agency's capac-
ity to meet this service. This
problem was further
exacerbated by the need to
serve growing numbers .of
newly arrived Russian im-
migrants. As a result, the
branch will move in August
from its quarters in the
Jewish Family Service
building to the Soble Build-
ing at Lincoln and Green-
field.
Hertzberg noted the
branch was founded seven
years ago with two staff
members to serve a few
hundred clients. Last year,
the branch had a staff of 20
and served several
thousand.

Another achievement
for the year noted by
Hertzberg was the inten-
sification of a vocational
rehabilitation program
to include engineering'
techniques. In addition,
the staff of this special
project to serve the se-
verely disabled had
begun training profes-
sionals in other work-
shops to enable them to
implement some of the
new vocational rehabili-
tation counseling
techniques developed by
the agency.

A third major achieve-
ment was the expansion of
services to mentally re-
tarded Wayne County resi-
dents.

Bernard H. Zaffern has
been installed as Sovereign
Prince of Carson Council,
Princes of Jerusalem of the
Ancient Accepted Scottish
Rite of Freemasonry for
1978-79.

As presiding officer of the
20,000-member organiza-
tion, he also will serve on
the board of trustees for the
Scottish Rite Bodies of De-
troit Valley, which includes
Branch, Hillsdale, Jackson,
Lenawee, Livingston,
Macomb, Monroe, Oakland,
St. Clair, Washtenaw and
Wayne Counties.
Zaffern is a member and
past master of Perfection
Lodge and also is a member
of Moslem Temple Shrine.
He has been a member of
Scottish Rite since 1970 and
has served as co-chairman
of its personal relations
committee.

STUART HERTZBERG
Hertzberg reported that
agency plans for the de-
velopment of a satellite
workshop in South Oakland
County were continuing. He
expressed the expectation
that this plan to serve 75 to
80 mentally retarded, men-
tally ill, and aged clients
could be achieved during
the current fiscal year.
In addition, JVS planned
to extend services to men-
tally retarded, mentally ill
clients in Wayne County.
Finally, plans were de-
veloped to further involve
vocational evaluation
techniques used by the
agency so as to increase
their effectiveness in serv-
ing severely physically dis-
abled clients.
