THE DETROIT JEWISH DRYS
Technicalities of a Jewish Divorce

cal effects on the family life
and purity of the Jewish
people.
Some sources claim that
the Aramaic language was
and is still used to establish
and continue a most obvious
clarification of the act of di-
vorce. There are some who
claim that Aramaic was
used because it was the
popular language of the
period in which the text of
the divorce document be-
came established.
A benediction is not pro-
nounced before the proceed-
ing of a Jewish divorce be-
cause sometimes the di-
vorce is written due to the
misbehavior of one of the
spouses. Thus, it may be less
of an accomplished mitzva
(commandment), in some
cases, than a compulsory re-
sult of misbehavior.
A second reason claims
that before writing the di-
vorce one is not sure that it
will be fully executed since
before it is duly signed by
A Jewish divorce is writ-
- ten in Aramaic. Such a tra-
dition is mentioned as early
as the writings of Ray Hai
Gaon. A number of reasons
are advanced for this insis-
tence.
One reason is that since
the issue of marital rela-
tions is of such great impor-
tance the divorce is written
in Aramaic to conform with
the original concerns and
qualifications of the proce-
dure so as to prevent any
doubt as to the validity of
the divorce.
Doubts cast on the
validity of the divorce
document could obviously

witnesses and handed to the
woman something could
happen to either interrupt
or invalidate the procedure.
Thus, writing the divorce
is just the beginning of a
procedure that takes sev-
eral steps which might or
might not be completed.
As a matter of fact, one
authority states that the
reason for which the Jewish
divorce procedure is so
technical and exacting is
that this would allow the
couple to change their
minds as to their wish to di-
vorce at any step during the
procedure before the
technicalities of the divorce
procedure have been com-
pleted.
Generally speaking, an
act which may not be con-
cluded is one over which a
benediction is not usually
made.
More Than 75 Jewish Centers
Providing Hot Meals for Aged

More than 75 Jewish
community centers and
YM-YWHAs are participat-
ing in providing kosher hot
meals for the elderly under
Title VII of the federal
Older Americans Act, the
National Jewish Welfare
Board has reported in a new
survey.
A JWB spokesman said
that the seniors do more
than get fed. In almost
every program there are so-
cial, recreational, cultural
and educational activities
provided at the centers and
Ys before and after the
meal. The spokesman said
that the elderly be-
neficiaries often serve as
volunteers, which gives
them a sense of worth and
belonging. ,
In practically every in-
stance, a community center,
whatever else it does, con-
ducts health-related ser-
vices, continuing education,
a variety of classes, discus-
sion groups, trips, counsel-
ing and other services.
"We have been able to
help these people im-
prove their eating habits
and provide better nutri-
tion," said Belle Likover,
assistant executive direc-
tor of the Jewish Com-
munity Center of Oak-
land. "We have seen an
improvement in social
skills and in health, along
with an increased in-
volvement of the par-
ticipants with one
another and with the
community."
Not all of the returned
questionnaires sent out by
JWB included statistics but
in those that did, a range of
300 to 2,500 meals served
weekly was indicated. The
spokesman said that in vir-
tually every community,
the Jewish federation is in-
volved in the program,
either as a sponsor, a pro-
vider of supplementary
funds, or in some other way.
Belt Halohem Helps Boost
Hopes of Disabled Soldiers
TEL AVIV — When the
disabled young Israeli sol-
dier feels he has no hope,
Beit Halohem — the Fight-
ers' House — comes to the
rescue.
The facility has a library
that serves as more of a
reading room, since the
members chose to read
magazines rather than
books.
What was originally
planned as an occupational
therapy room was formed
into a bridge club where
members can play bridge or
chess, study languages or
sip a cup of tea. Teachers
Holocaust Essay

LOS ANGELES — The
Congress of American Jews
from Poland and Survivors
of Concentration Camps is
sponsoring its fourth an-
nual essay contest on the
Holocaust.
The contest is being used
to promote research and
education on the Holocaust.
Essays must be 4,000-7,000
words in length. Prizes of
$300, $200 and $100 will be
awarded.

also were available to help
students study for univer-
sity entrance exams.
An air-raid shelter was
turned into a shooting
range, and the shooting
club soon boasted a
membership of 250 — the
largest in the facility.
An elevator was installed
in the pool so that those in
wheelchairs could get into
the water with a minimum
of outside help. Judo lessons
are given to the blind to
boost their confidence, and
many blind persons are
taught to ride a bicycle.
Sports also are a major
program at the Beit
Halohem home. A study
showed that the disabled
veterans who participated
in sports showed not only
healthier bodies, but heal-
thier mental attitudes.

The M.E.'s Largest Hospital
TEL HASHOMER — The
Chaim Sheba Medical
Center is primarily com-
posed of Quonset huts dis-
persed over nearly 150 acres
near Tel Aviv, with a new
facility presently under
construction. With some
1,200 beds, 300 or more
physicians, 700 nurses, and
1,200 other employees, this
center is the largest such
facility in the Middle East.
The historic development
of Tel Hashomer into the
Chaim Sheba Medical
Center began in 1948. The
present site was an aban-
doned army camp under the
direction of the Surgeon
General of the Israeli De-
fense Forces, Chaim Sheba.
The group of buildings was
then transformed into
Military Hospital No. 5.
Some five years later, the
responsibility for hospital
administration was given to
the Ministry of Health, and
in the years between 1959
and 1968, a rehabilitation
center, an artificial kidney
unit, a nursing school, an
institute of audiology, and a
school for speech therapy
were added. An exchange
program for foreign medical
students was also launched.
The hospital is af-
filiated with the Sackler
School of Medicine of Tel
Aviv University, and
serves as a clinical facil-
ity and medical research
center.
The center combines its
resources to meet the needs
of a highly diverse patient
population. In addition to
the civilian patients (80-90
percent) during peacetime
operations, care is also pro-
vided for the welfare sector,
which is not entitled to care
under the Kupat Holim or
Sick Fund.
