Friday, July 1, 1918 13 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS NY Forms Racial Panel After Incident NEW YORK — The New York regional board of the Anti-Defamation League of Bnai Brith has called Mayor Edward Koch's appoint- ment of an intergroup rela- tions committee "an impor- tant first step" in helping reduce tensions in New York City. The ADL regional board said it supports "Mayor Koch's creation of a commit- tee to study and reduce in- tergroup tensions in New York, particularly in light of the interracial discord which has manifested itself in the Crown Heights com- munity in recent days. "The mayor's action is an important first step in meet- ing the need to root out the causes of racial violence and tension in our city. We be- lieve, however, that in order to be fully effective, the committee should be ex- panded to include persons and groups who are expert in resolving social and re- ligious conflict." The ADL also offered its cooperation and re- sources to the panel. Recently, an elderly Hasidic Jew was mugged by a black youth, who was then beaten by a group of Hasidic youth. The black youth was hospitalized in police cus- tody and two Hasidim ar- rested in the case. • Builders to Meet for Israel Parley - TEL AVIV —The first in- ternational conference of building contractors and promoters will be held Feb. 18-24 in Tel Aviv. Building specialists from all over the world will gather to discuss issues and problems of in- creasing concern to the con- struction industry. There will be visits to the Technion in Haifa and newly developed areas of Jerusalem. There also will be a number of lectures by experts in the field of con- struction.
