Chatauqua Cites Hallmark Show

NEW YORK — The
Hallmark Hall of Fame
production, "Have I Got a
Christmas for You," was
cited recently by the Jewish
Chautauqua Society, a divi-
sion of the National Federa-
tion of Temple Brother-
hoods, at the presentation of
its Public Service Award to
Hallmark star Milton Berle
at a recent banquet in Los

0

Angeles.
"Have I Got a Christmas
for You" conveyed a mes-
sage of interfaith under-
standing. It was inspired by
the temple brotherhoods'
Christmas Mitzva program
in which their members
substitute for Christians in
their jobs so they can spend
Christmas Eve with their
families.

JERICHO — Achmad
Nammari lives in a shim-
mering lake of plastic in

Jericho near the Dead Sea.

Under the sheets of clear
polyethelene which cover
the fields in this water-rich
oasis town is a startling
array of tomatoes, cucum-
bers and eggplants. These
vegetables find their way to
tables in Israel, Judea,
Samaria and even to Arab
countries across the Jordan
River.
Tlry have made Achmad
Nammari, if not a wealthy
man, at least a very com-
fortable one.

As a successful vegeta-
ble grower, Nammari is
typical of a new breed of
Arab farmer in Judea
and Samaria on the West
Bank of the Jordan
River, who have taken
advantage of the latest
farming skills made av-
ailable to them since 1967
when the Israelis took
over.

and an ever growing eager-
ness to work together with
Israel experts that has
caused the agricultural
output of the administered
territories to increase an
amazing 500 percent since
1967.
A network of district ag-
ricultural offices with 15 Is-
raeli instructors has been
set up. Six hundred local re-
sidents received specialized
training and together with
the Israelis run operations
in the six subdistricts of the
region. At every district of-
fice, veterinary services,
training facilities and a
chain of experimental sta-
tions have been added.
The efforts invested in
agriculture in the West
Bank have clearly borne
fruit. The average annual
wage has been pushed from
$900 to more than $4,000.
"Now we plug the televi-
sion into a wall socket and
not into the tractor bat-
tery," says Nammari, re-
porting on how his life as a
farmer has improved
dramatically in the past
several years. He is eager to
show off the small, used
generator, which chugs
rhythmically in a deserted
chicken coop behind the
house.

The recently purch-
ased generator, which

gives enough electricity

for lights, the television
and a refrigerator, is
Nammari's first luxury
purchase, he points out

fully deposited near the
roots of the plants through
tiny holes in special hoses
which lie in rows alongside
the seedlings. The water
goes directly into the soil,
saving almost 40 percent
which would be lost trough
evaporation in conventional
methods of irrigation.
Along with new fertilizers
the trickle system began to
give an impressive increase
in yield.

Soon
after,
polyethelene coverings
came to Nammari's farm,
which by then had grown
from two to 35 acres.
Strips of plastic placed
directly on the earth kept
in the moisture; black
plastic served a double
purpose by keeping out
weeds.

Today, the Nammari
ily farmhouse is surrounded
by miles of plastic hothouse
tubes standing two to three
feet in height; they keep in
the moisture and keep out
the harsh winter cold at
night, which is typical of the
strange climate in Jericho,
the lowest point on earth.
Life most certainly is not
yet a complete paradise for
Achmad Nammari. He still
has political disagreements
with the Israelis, but Nam-
mari has found a practical
road of cooperation with his
Jewish neighbors.
