Some Likud members are
urging Begin to take Weiz-
man to task for what they
regard as disparaging
statements about Begin and
Foreign 'Minister Moshe
Dayan. Others are demand-
ing that the defense minis-
ter resign, but Begin is un-
likely to demand this ac-
tion.

Weizman's views were
at sharp variance with
those of Begin and
Dayan, whose formula
rejecting consideration
of the future of the oc-
cupied territories until
the five years of "self
rule" have run their
course prevailed. Al-
though the Cabinet ses-
sion was closed, Weizman
was widely quoted as
having told Begin and
Dayan that they
"evaded" a reply to the
American queries and
that they failed to "see
the handwriting on the
wall."
He reportedly accused
Begin of appeasing Dayan
and Begin's close Herut as-
sociate, Minister-
Without-Portfolio Haim
Landau, who advocated an
uncompromising response
to the U.S. The Histadrut
daily Dever reported that
Weizman charged Begin
and Dayan with "lying to us
for months" and "leading
the country to war." This
statement was vehemently
denied by a spokesman for
Weizman.
During the Knesset de-
bate, Dayan drew attention
to the initial reaction from
Washington which was that
the U.S. would continue to
seek progress toward peace
on the basis of the Israeli
and Egyptian positions. "If
this is the official view, we
will be very happy," Dayan
said. He said Israel's self-
rule plan had not been
negotiated with Egypt and
there was little reason for
Israel to make further con-
cessions at this state toward
a resumption of the peace
talks with Egypt.
