He spoke at a reception mark- ing the 60th anniversary of his public service, given by the American Section of the World Zionist Organization Executiye. The reception also marked 60 years of mar- riage for Rabbi and Mrs. Goldstein. In a statement which was read by his wife because he had laryngitis, Goldstein said that in addition to the commitment to aliya, the other essential bases of Zionist commitment are "the inclusion of the aliya motif in the education of the Jewish child" and "the cul- tivation of Hebrew as a spo- ken language, in the cur- ricula of Jewish schools, as a vital bond with Israel and with Klal Israel." Mrs. Charlotte Jacob- son, chairman of the WZO-American Section, pointed out that Golds- tein "has held more pres- idencies and chairman- ships than any other liv- ing American Jew." She said his contributions as a Zionist leader were paralleled by his equally brilliant contributions to the American Jewish scene. Mrs. Jacobson also paid Gypsy Agonies Under Nazism Factually Reve aled in Novel. Persecution of the Gyp- sies under Nazism marks one of the beastliest of Hitl- erite crimes. In the non-Jewish ranks of sufferers during the re- gime of the Nazis, the Gyp- sies were among the greatest sufferers. The story of Gypsy agonies needed to be retold and Stefan Kanfer per- formed the task in a deeply moving novel, "The Eighth Sin" (Random House), which is as much fact as it is fiction. The narrative ro- tates around the revealed historic facts about the Nazi terror as it struck at the Gypsies. Kanfer, while revealing the bestialities of the Nazis with which his people were terrorized, also portrays the life of the Gypsies, their resort to trickery for livelihood, their misdeeds as well as high qualities. In the main it is the sufferings they endured and the manner in which they were made scapegoats of Hitlerism that is basic to the story in "The Eighth Sin." The title is based on an eighth sin following the seven deadly sins in the ex- perience of the people in- volved. Impressively, this novel has its Jewish characters, the survivors from the death camps, the continuity of the few who live after an annihilation. Thus, the eighth sin of confrontation of the novel's hero with his own people as- sumes a universal aspect because the Nazi terror is exposed here in a fashion • additionally appended to the Jewish tragedy of the Holocaust. — P.S.
