TEL AVIV (JTA) — Offi-
cially, a state of war exists
between Israel and Jordan.
But that did not deter the
mayor and citizens of Eilat
from sending warm con-
gratulations to King Hus-
sein and his new American
bride, the former Elizabeth
Halaby, when they arrived
at the neighboring Jorda-
nian town of Aqaba.
The warmth was more
than figurative. The mes-
sage, "Congratulations To
The Royal Couple From The
City of Eilat," was spelled
out in letters of flame 15 feet
high and 75 feet long, that
were visible for miles.
Mayor Gad Katz, who was
among the hundreds of
Eilat residents and visitors
watching the huge sign
when it was ignited, said he
hoped the demonstration of

Israelis Search Off-Shore Ships

TEL AVIV (JTA) — Adm.
Michael Barkai, comman-
der of Israel's Navy, has dis-
closed that the navy is stop-
ping and searching foreign
vessels that approach Is-
rael's coast as a measure
against possible terrorist
infiltration by sea.
Barkai, who spoke on the
occasion of Navy Day, cele-
brated June 15, said this ac-
tivity was permitted by in-
ternational maritime law
which allows a country to
stop any ship suspected of
carrying persons or equip-
ment that might be injuri-
ous to its security.
He said the stop-and-
search procedure was in-
itiated after the March 11
assault on the Tel Aviv-
Haifa highway by terrorists
who landed on the Israel
coast in rubber dinghies. He

Mayor Katz said he has

Disabled Israeli
Veterans to Visit

NEW YORK (JTA) —
Fifty disabled Israeli war
veterans are being wel-
comed into the homes of
American Jewish families
this month in a cultural ex-
change launched by Mrs.
Sylvis Robinson, whose
husband, Donald M. Robin-
son, is the president of the
Joint Distribution Commit
tee.
During June there will be
10 to 12 Israeli veterans
hosted in Pittsburgh; Great
Neck, N.Y.; Stamford,
Conn.; Washington; and To-
ronto.
The program, now in its
fourth year, began after
Mrs. Robinson learned
about European visits of Is-
raeli disabled soldiers while
at a JDC conference in
Geneva with her husband.
Since then she has ex-
perimented each summer
with bringing small groups
to such cities as her home
community of Pittsburgh,
as well as Detroit, Chicago
and this year's participat-
ing communities.
