JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Two ends of the Knesset
political spectrum joined
together last week to form
an unusual coalition in a
demand for a thorough dis-
cussion of the relations bet-
ween Israel's government
and American Jewry.

Eliav said in a motion to the
agenda that the govern -
ment, by its failure to make
progress on peace, was los-
ing the support of American
Jewry.
When Deputy Minister
Yoran Aridor took to the
podium to strike the mo-
tion off the agenda, he
was faced with the unex-
pected opposition of his
party colleague, Geula
Cohen, who heads the
Knesset Immigration and
Absorption Committee.
She suggested that the
motion. be discussed in
her committee.
"Just because the motion
was raised by Eliav is not a
good enough reason to
strike it off," she contended.
But Aridor quoted public
opinion polls which showed
that 83 percent of U.S. Jews
back the policy of Israel's
government. Premier
Menahem Begin's last visit
to the U.S. also proved how
completely American Jewry
identifies itself with the
government's peace plan, he
said.

former attorney general of
Orange Free State in South
Africa, told the South Afri-
can Board of Jewish Dep-
uties at its 30th national
conference that while the
government of South Africa
opposes emigration, it is
sympathetic to profession-
als who emigrate to Israel.

World Parley on Jewish Law

NEW YORK — The Tar-
buth Foundation for the
Advancement of Hebrew
Culture and the Oxford
Centre for Postgraduate
Hebrew Studies have joined
again for an international
conference in Oxford this
summer, it was announced
by Abraham Goodman,
president of the Tarbuth
Foundation.
This year's conference,
scheduled for Aug. 22-24 at
Oxford University will be
devoted to the theme:
"Jewish Law in Legal His-
tory and in the Modern
World."
The program range of
the conference will en-
compass presentations
and discussions on such
topics as "from biblical
law in the ancient Near
East" to "Jewish Law in
America."
Papers will be delivered
by Prof. J.D. Bleich,
Yeshiva University-, Justice
Haim Cohen, the Supreme
Court of Israel; Prof. David
Daube, University of
California at Berkley;Prof.
Z. Falk; D. Goitein, Insti-
tute for Advanced Study,
Princeton; Prof. Arthur
Hyman and Prof. Aaron
Kirschenbaum, both of
Yeshiva University; Ber-

TEL AVIV (JTA) — Arab
intelligence has improved
greatly since the Yom Kip-
pur War and now consti-
tutes a serious threat to Is-
rael, according to Gen.
Shlomo Gazit, Israel's chief
of intelligence.
According to Gazit, the
Arabs received up-to-date
intelligence on Israeli
military moves through
captured documents and
prisoners of war in October
1973. He said, however,
that since then a gap has
developed between what the
Arabs learned and the real
situation.
He said he did not believe
that Israeli intelligence
services would repeat the
mistakes of the Yom Kippur
War.
