In any discussion of the Middle East, what should not be forgotten is the long list of atrocities committed by the Pales- tinian terrorist move- ment in which innocent people, often foreigners remote from the Puerto Rican pilgrims at Palestinian-Israeli scene, Lod airport (1972); the have been mercilessly murder of the U.S. Am- slaughtered. Shepherd, president of the Jewish Community Council of Metropolitan Detroit.) By JOHN SHEPHERD To the Editor: In an op-ed article in the Detroit News on'June 1, 1978 John M. Peters makes a number of statements that need correction. His rewrit- ing of history should not go unchallenged. Israel has not been the premier military power in the Middle East since its in- ception as Mr. Peters claims. During its war of in- dependence in 1948, Israel fought a vastly superior equipped and trained Arab force from four countries. The ill-equipped infant state of Israel was not helped by the United States' total arms embargo placed I DON'T WANT TO SELL YOU A CAR . . . I WANT TO HELP YOU BUY ONE! We remind Mr. Peters that Israel accepted the 1947 United Nations par- tition plan despite its checkerboard nature and security problems. The Arab states unanim- ously rejected it and proclaimed war. Every war since then has been a result of Arab aggres- sion. Territories oc- cupied by Israel as a re- sult of those Arab- instigated wars have been kept to ensure sec- urity for Israel's citizens and to avoid repeats of past Arab mobilizations on Israel's borders. In addition, secure borders are needed by Israel in order to prevent Palesti- nian terrorist infiltration which has caused hun- dreds of civilian deaths and injuries. The terrorist bombings in Jerusalem of a bus in which six teenagers were killed and the attack of a bus on the Tel Aviv-Haifa road in which 37 people were mur- dered by the PLO are two vivid reminders of the PLO's plans for Israel. Is- rael has repeatedly called for negotiations with the Arab states to determine secure borders for all. We remind Mr. Peters that it was Sadat who abruptly broke off peace negotiations in January. To say territo- rial expansion is an historic goal of Israel is nonsense. WHERE PEOPLE STILL COME FIRST GLASSMAN 0,6top,Ai__, on the Middle East in 1948. It must be noted that Is- rael received no military grants from the U.S. until 1974. In comparison, U.S. military grants to the Arab states totaled $369.3 mill- ion frOm 1946 to 1973. Furthermore, in 1975, the Arab states held a three to one edge over Israel in com- bat aircraft and tanks, a nine to one edge in artillery, five to one in armed forces divisions and 12 to one in SAM batteries. These are not the statistics of a "pre- mier military power." It is estimated, based on recent trends, that the gap bet- ween Israeli and Arab military strength has grown since 1975, in the Arabs' favor. In 1956, President Nasser of Egypt nationalized the Suez Canal. For eight years prior to that, Egypt closed the Suez Canal to Israeli OLDSMOBILE INC. 28000 TELEGRAPH RD. • SOUTHFIELD • PHONE 354-3300 shipping despite the fact that the United Nations Security Council on Sept. 1, 1951 ordered Egypt to open the Canal. The UN was un- able to curb Egypt or to en- force its decisions. Egypt also blockaded the Straits of Tiran, vital to Israeli ship- ping and security. In Oc- tober 1956, Nasser entered an alliance with Jordan and stepped up fedayeen attacks on Israel. Israel, with the support of Britain and Fr- ance, moved against Egypt, capturing Gaza and Sinai, which she later was pres- sured into returning. The noted columnist Wal- ter Lippman wrote at that time: "To ignore the Egyp- tian raids and to treat Israel as if it were the aggressor and Egypt as if it were the innocent victim ... was a grave mistake in policy, in- defensible in principle and in fact entirely unrealistic and impracticable." So much for Mr. Peters' rewriting of the history of 1956. In Mr. Peters' article, an Israeli is quoted on the cause of the 1967 war. Any intelligent person knows that the Arabs in- stigated the 1967 war. The fact is that in the years since 1967 Israel has not partially nor to- tally annexed the West Bank. This contrasts with Jordan's illegal annexa- tion of that territory in 1948 which event the Arab states have never recognized. In conclusion, the United States supports Israel be- cause it is the only democ- racy in the Middle East, in a world that has too few. That, in and of itself, merits continued U.S. support. The only country that came close to Israel as a democ- racy in that region was Lebanon, before the Pales- tiniani started the Civil War and Syria invaded that country. Israel will not let that happen to her nor should the United States allow it. • Mr. Peters revises history to suit his particular bias. When one is young, God forgives his stumblings; when one is a man, God weighs his works; when one grows old, God waits for his repentance. •4:74.4, • JEWISH mid-air (1970). It is a hor- rible history of the slaughter of the innocent, with one of the most re- volting the commandeer- ing of two buses on the 'Eel Aviv-Haifa road in March. When the widely circu- lated Detroit News carries an article in which one of the murderers is charac- terized as "a very nice girl, a very, very good girl", one re- calls what Humpty Dumpty said in "Alice in Wonder- land": "When I use a word it means just what I chose it to mean."
