JULIUS CHAJES
image rises high in his pro-
fession.
The combination of the
three skills is in evidence in
the newest recording of his
widely-acclaimed works. In
"Chajes Plays and Conducts
Chajes Compositions", pro-
duced by Archer Record
Pressing Co. the music
lover is treated to the fol-
lowing Chajes compositions
played by Chajes:
Concerto Opus 48 for
piano and orchestra in E
and Israeli Melodies Opus
35.
The Israeli selections
again emphasize the
composer-pianist-con-
ductor devotions and ap-
preciation for the inspi-
rations derived from his
devotions to themes
which have helped
popularize him and his
music.
Israeli Melodies is a suite
of six pieces, each treating
its melody in a unique fash-
ion:
Song of the Well is a do-
rian tune followed by four
variations, each increasing
in tempo. A coda follows
which restates the theme
accompanied by its frag-
ments in diminution.
Song of th.e Pioneers, also
in the dorian mode is com-
pletely in canon.
Song of the Night is a
two-part melody, both
parts being treated in a
free contrapuntal style.
Song of the Desert is also
a two-part melody. In its re-
peat the first part is varied
employing canonic
techniques.
Song of Canaan is a
melody containing free
counterpoint and canon.
Song of Galilee follows a
similar procedure of Song of
the Well. It contains four
variations, each displaying
a different rhythmic and
contrapuntal arrangement
of the theme.
