"A Family Fortune" is
realistic, and aS the name
indicates, an American suc-
cess story. Its principal
characters, Max and Ida,
came to the United States
after the First World War
illegally and under the as-
sumed name Lessing.
Eighteen-year-old Max
was an Austrian army de-
serter who smashed his col-
onel's head for calling him a
kike. Seventeen-year-old
Ida, Max's future bride, ran
away from home because
her father refused to teach
her reading and writing.
In the United States, Max
and Ida settled in Min-
neapolis on Minnehaha
Ave. in a one room apart-
ment without plumbing
facilities. Max started out
as a pushcart peddler sel-
ling inexpensive notions.
Soon, he added home-made
"Passover wine" to his
wares.

ing; therefore, ground beef,
with no waste, if often the
best buy. Serve these meat-
balls over brown rice with a
marinated bean salad and
melon for dessert.

2 lbs. ground meat
3 eggs
1 med. onion, diced

V2 cup matza meal
1 tsp. seasoning salt.
1 /4 tsp. pepper
1 can tomato paste (6 oz.)
11/2 cups water
1 16 oz can whole berry cran-
berry sauce

2 tbsps. catsup
Mix meat, eggs, onions,
matza meal, seasoning salt,
pepper and form into small
meat balls. Combine tomato
paste, water, cranberry sauce
and catsup in a heavy 3-qt.
saucepot Mix well and bring to
a rolling boll, stirring fre-
quently. Add meatballs. Sim-
mer covered on low heat for 2
hours. Serves. 6.
