Five-Day Week
Argued in Israel

JERUSALEM — The Is-
raeli Cabinet has begun to
consider a five-day, 45-hour
work week for Israel. The
proposal was made by David
Levy, minister for absorp-
tion, and has the backing of
the National Religious
Party.
The NRP believes it will
give religious workers more
time with their families,
and may allow non-
observant workers the op-
portunity to observe the
Sabbath if they have an ad-
ditional day off.
The measure is repor-
tedly opposed by Finance
Minister Simha Ehrlich and
Labor Minister Israel Katz.
Katz says the Israel

economy is not ready for
such a change, saying
productivity must first
improve. He said he was
concerned that the move
to a 45-hour week would
be followed by pressure
for a 40-hour week.

Katz said that of the 261
Israeli firms who have
changed to a shorter work
week, 43 have changed back
to the six-day week.
