She was two weeks late in registering . . . so was Barry Wiss, who Debbie had never met before . . . Both were told they would have to go to another building to register . . . I am Rabbi Irwin Tanenbaum of Tem- ple Beth Israel of Jackson and chaplain of the Jewish congregation at the prison of Jackson. I am writing this letter in the latter capacity. "Two days per week I am at the prison serving the Jewish men. I am also here for the holidays and travel to other prison branches (camps, Marquette, farms, etc.) throughout the year. We participate in Jewish activities such as counsel- ing, Shabat, Pesach, Yizkor, Hanuka and High Holy Day services. Also, a Pesach Seder and Yom Hashoa. "In attempting to approx- imate a Jewish community environment, even within our severe limitations, we have established our own Tzedaka system which has provided for 1,000 Braille calendars for the blind in Is- rael, as well as aiding the Jewish National Fund tree drive . . . We are also in the process of building a lib- rary, for use in classes, with reference materials and matters supplementary to a Jewish education. In addi- tion, I attempt to supply the men with whatever objects of Judaica they might need. "The temple here over- sees a fund called the Jewish Inmate Benefit Fund. I administer the fund. We utilize the fund to pro- vide a Seder, packages for the men on Hanuka and Pesach, literature and Jewish objects, various emergency needs that may arise as well as the projects mentioned above. Our fund relies on donations and I would like to appeal to all on behalf of the men. "Tax-deductible checks may be sent to Temple Beth Israel Annex, Inmate Be- nefit Fund, 801 W.
