Communities Asked to Challenge Cults
PHILADELPHIA — The
Jewish Community Rela-
tions Council of Greater
Philadelphia has prepared a
comprehensive series of
recommendations to help
the Jewish community de-
termine how best to respond
to the new phenomenon of
religious cults and their im-
pact on Jewish youth, it was
announced by Solomon
Fisher, president.
The recommendations
are contained in a 70-page
report, "The Challenge of
the Cults," based on a one-
year study by the JCRC's
Special Committee on Exo-
tic Cults.
Among the cults studied
were the Children of God,
Hare Krishna, the Unifica-
tion Church, the Church of
Scientology, Divine Light
Mission, and the Church of
Bible Understanding
(Forever Family).
Among the facts most
often cited by young
people for joining -milts

I'LL WORK HARD FOR YOU!
were loneliness and a
longing for friendship
and acceptance, the de-
sire for spiritual or tran-
scendent experience, the
search for a system of
moral authority, a strong
desire for a sense of pur-
pose and a way to make a
positive, personal con-
tribution to the im-
provement of society.
The committee found that
young people who get in-
volved in cults come from a
very wide variety of reli-
gious, ethnic and social
backgrounds, but that vir-
tually all of them were
white, college-educated, be-
tween the ages of 18-26 and
from families that were
middle or upper class eco-
nomically.
Proportions of Jewish cult
members range, according
to committee estimates and
depending on the specific
cult, anywhere from 12 to 45
percent. -
The committee concluded
that the most disturbing
characteristic of the cults
was the fact that they are, in
essence, small and self-
contained totalitarian
societies where the exercise
of free will and independent
thinking is actively dis-
couraged, if not forbidden
altogether.
The committee recom-
mended that JCRC work
actively with other reli-
gious, civic and educa-
tional groups to monitor
the activities of the cults,
compile more informa-
tion about their activities
and appeal, and develop
active programs of public
information and educa-
tion to alert young people
to the true nature of these
groups and their re-
cruitment techniques.

The committee also
makes several specific
recommendations concern-
ing ways rabbis, Jewish
agencies and other religious
leaders, religious institu-
tions and social service
organizations can help fam-
ily and friends respond con-
structively when, they dis-

they know has joined a cult.

• Increased support for

tensive
Jewish
environments,
where
Jewish values can be lived
and taught simultane-
ously, such as Jewish sum-
mer camps; trips to Israel,
especially related to work
and study projects as op-
posed to tourism; Jewish re-
treats programs for high
school students, college stu-
dents, young adults and
families; creation of a
Jewish retreat center
facility to house such pro-
grams.
• Creation of informal in-
