Prisoner Alleges Deplorable Conditions for Observant Jews An article in the May issue of Fortune News, a monthly newspaper for ex- convicts, describes alleged "Anti-Semitism in Federal Prisons." The article was written by Marshall Zeidman, a federal prisoner at the Chicago Metropolitan Cor- rectional Center. Zeidman writes, inter alia: "I was originally in- carcerated at the Chicago MCC, where I was introduced to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons' 'kosher food program'. At the time our meals consisted of two eggs, two hot dogs and about four oz. of tuna per man per day, which we pre- pared ourselves. "We ate at odd hours, often being compelled to wait as long as an hour and a half for a staff member to show up to let us into our cooking area. And you can tire quickly of eggs, tuna, hot dogs, eggs, hot dogs, tuna — day after day. "Complaints to the food service administrator pro- duced a statement that he just didn't given a damn — until I threatened to talk to friends on the Chicago newspapers. "Shortly afterwards we began receiving kosher chicken, hamburger meat and bread. And I was quickly shipped out to the alleged camp at the Medical Center for Federal Prison- ers, at Springfield, Missouri — where the real fun be- gan!" Zeidman alleges that guards, food service staff Harry Truman's Aid to Israel Founding Hebrew University Symposium Topic JERUSALEM — Presi- dent Harry S Truman's con- tribution to the establish- ment of the state of Israel was marked at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem by an international sym- posium on "President Harry S Truman — the Man, the Statesman and his Role in the Creation of Israel" and the opening of a permanent multi-media exhibition re- lating to the Truman era. The symposium on the late -33rd President of the United States at the univer- sity's Truman Research In- stitute opened on May 8, which would have been Harry Truman's 94th birthday. Chaired by university President Avraham Har- man, the opening ceremony included greetings from Deputy Prime Minister Prof. Yigael Yadin, U.S. Ambassador to Israel Samuel Lewis and the Chairman of the Truman Institute's Board of Over- seers Nathaniel L. Golds- tein of New York. In a keynote speech, former Foreign Minister Yigal Anon described the foundations of United States-Israel relations and explored various di- mensions of future rela- tions as well as the role of Israel in world politics. Speakers included Prof. Frank Freidel of Harvard Universtiy; Prof. Richard Kirkendall of Indiana Uni- versity; Prof. Allan Weins- tein of Smith College; Clayton Fritchey, a former member of the Truman ad- ministration; Judge Mur- ray I. Gurfein, presently a member of the U.S. Court of Appeals; Dr. Benedict K. Zobrist, director of the Harry S Truman Library; journalist and author Robert Donovan; Prof. Gab- riel Cohen of Tel Aviv Uni- versity; Dr. Joseph Heller of the Hebrew University; Dr. Ian Bickerton of the Uni- versity of New South Wales, Australia; Dr. Eliahu Elath, special representa- tive of the Provisional Gov- ernment of Israel to the U.S. and former Hebrew Univer- sity piesident; Dr. Shlomo Slonim and Prof. Moshe Ma'oz, director of the Tru- man Institute. The permanent exhibi- tion relating to the Truman Cite DropsieChief era, housed on the top floor of the Truman Institute on Mount Scopus is particu- larly geared to young Is- raelis who are unaware of Harry Truman's involve- ment in the establishment of Israel, and for visitors from the U.S. Jerusalem is the only city in the world, apart from Truman's hometown of Independence, Mo., to have a permanent exhibition on him. About 250 items, includ- ing political cartoons, let- ters and other memorabilia, depict Harry Truman's career from his time as a haberdasher in Missouri through his presidency and emphasize his recognition of Israel on the day it de- clared its independence. Part of the exhibition is an audiovisual show which includes a film biography and a movie on Truman's involvement with Israel en- titled "At War With the Ex- perts." • Full & half day programs • Bus service to suburbs • Flexible lunch program 'o State certified staff call 967-4010 for 1918-19 registration dress warmly, eat the right foods, pick good company, work hard, be fair with my customers, always give them extra value for their money ... He said in the article that a civil rights suit is pending against one of the adminis- trators at the facility be- cause of the abuse Zeidman suffered. Zeidman's complaints were ignored, he wrote, and led to his transfer to other federal facilities with equally bad results. At one point he describes a 'punishment" bus trip through the South instead of a direct transfer back to Chicago. DR.
