NEW YORK (JTA) —
The Connecticut Supreme
Court has granted a motion
by the American Jewish
Congress to stay enforce-
ment of a lower court order
restricting overnight wor-
ship for members of a con-
gregation in Norfolk called
Beit Havurah.
The Litchfield court of
common pleas last fall rec-
ognized the status of Beit
Havurah as a house of wor-
ship but upheld a local zon-
ing board ruling which
limited worship to certain
holidays determined by the
board.
The AJCongress has ap-
pealed that ruling to the
state Supreme Court and
the case is expected to be
argued next October. In the
meantime, the AJCongress
has enabled Beit Havurah
to function without restric-
tions by obtaining the stay,
AJCongress officials said.

Significance of the Omer Count
By RABBI SAMUEL FOX
(Copyright 1978, JTA, Inc.)
The days between
Passover and Shavuot are
ceremoniously counted day
by day and week by week
because of the command-
ment of the Torah
(Leviticus 23:15).
It is interesting to note, in
this respect, that unlike its
procedure regarding all
other major festivals, the
Bible does not give the
explicit date of the Shavuot
holiday except to state that
Dreyfus Street
PARIS (JTA) — A street
named after Jewish Cap-
tain Alfred Dreyfus (1859-
1935), the man wrongly
charged with treason and
defended by writer Emile
Zola, was inaugurated in
the French city of Rennes.
The city's mayor unveiled
the plaque in the presence of
one of Dreyfus' daughters,
Mrs. Renee Levy, and other
members of the family.
The City Council decided
to rename the street after
Dreyfus on the 80th an-
niversary of the publication
of Zola's letter to the French
President, the famous
"J'Accuse." French televi-
sion is also due to show a
special program to mark the
occasion.
A Bishop's
Anti-Semitism
LONDON — An Angli-
can assistant bishop has
come under fire for a radio
address last month in which
he suggested that Jews
"have always been engaged
in religious wars" and have
"forgotten the pains of per-
secution and now persecute
Palestinians."
Dr. John A.T. Robinson
was quoted by the London
Jewish Chronicle as equat-
ing Israel's policies in the
administered territories
with the apartheid policies
of South Africa and the ra-
cial policies of the Nazis.
Dr. Robinson told the
Chronicle that his remarks
had been distorted and
taken out of context. His
remarks were rebuked by
other church leaders.

structionist Rabbinical Col-

it comes about after count-
ing the appropriate number
of days and weeks from
Passover. This indicates the
indispensible bond that
exists between these two
festivals.
Since Passover com-
memorates our freedom and
Shavuot commemorates our
revelation and commit-
ment, the bond represents
the belief that commitment
is impossible without a
freedom to commit one's self
and freedom is meaningless
without one's commitment
to ideals and faith.
There are those who
claim that the count-is
made to keep track of the
passing days so that the
pilgrims who came to
Jerusalem for Passover
and who return home will
not tarry too long since
they have to return to
Jerusalem for the
Shavuot holiday.
Some mystic commen-
taries state that the count-
ing was done so as to emu-
late one who had become
impure and who has to
count a period of time until
he reached the state of pur-
ity. Passover ended the He-
brews' state of impurity in
Egypt while the revelation
emphasized their state of
purity which is necessary to
make the proper commit-
ment to God's revelation.
Others claim that count-
ing the days and weeks is a
symbol of the eagerness and
anxiety with which the
Jews anticipated the reve-
lation. Revelation is mean-
ingless unless there is a de-
gree of desire and anticipa-
tion to obtain the truth.
There are also- those who
claim that the counting
ritual ties together the
physical basis of life (i.e.,
the celebration of the har-
vest season) and the
spiritual dimension of life
(i.e., the faith and our com-
mitment to the dictates of
that faith).
Physical existence with-
out moral commitment is
unproductive. Moral com-
mitment without physical
existence is incomplete.
Man's duty is not to deny
either the physical or the
spiritual but to recognize
the indelible bond between
them.
