Rabbi Gettinger, af- filiated with the Young Is- rael movement and an of- ficer of the Union of Or- thodox Rabbis, lauded the Detroit Orthodox commun- ity for its unity. He said Jewish unity is vital today and cited the example of the vote of Sen. Abraham Ribicoff of Connecticut in the Se- nate's approving the sale of U.S. jets to Egypt and Saudi Arabia, as well as to Israel. "One Jewish Senator broke ranks on the plane sale," the rabbi said, "and it was a message to the goyim." He added, "We must work harder for unity. Unfortu- nately, it takes a war against Israel to bring to- gether all Jews. We must learn to act in a unified manner in peace as we do in war." Gustav Berenholz was general chairman of the event. Cantor Hyman Adler of Cong. Bnai David sang the national . anthems, Julius Rotenberg led the Hamotzi and Max Sosin led the Birkat Hamazon. Honorary chairmen of the dinner were Irwin I. Cohn and Rotenberg. Michael Karbal and Nathan Sober- man were co-chairmen.
