Cabinet Backs Chief of Staff
in Controversy on Territories

JERUSALEM (JTA) — A
majority of the Cabinet
backed Chief of Staff Gen.
Rafael Eitan in an angry
controversy that erupted
over his remarks in a televi-
sion interview that Israel
must retain the West Bank
permanently in order to de-
fend itself.
He also questioned the

good faith of Arab peace in-
itiatives and insisted that
Israel must deal with the
Arab states as if their ulti-
mate goal was its destruc-
tion.

Eitan's statements, in an
Independence Day inter-
view, aroused widespread
public protests. Labor
Alignment MK Yossi Sarid
submitted an urgent motion
to the Knesset accusing the
Chief of Staff of involving
Israel's armed forces "for
the first time in the history
of the state in the central
political debate now taking
place in the country."

The issue was raised at
Sunday's Cabinet meet-
ing by Deputy Premier
Yigael Yadin, leader of
the Democratic Move-
ment for Change. But an
official communique
said, "The Cabinet de-
termined that in giving
his replies, the Chief of
Staff did not depart from
the rule of his being sub-
ject to the authority of the
government."

Rabbi Arthur Hertzberg,
former president of the
American Jewish Congress,
also hit Israeli government
policies while being inter-
viewed on Israeli TV last
week.

He said that American
Jews were solidly behind Is-
rael, but differentiated be-
tween security considera-
tions and ideological ones.

Meanwhile, the Begin
government got a solid vote
of support from one of its co-
alition partners this week,
at the opening of the annual
convention of the ultra-
Orthodox Aguda Israel.

At the opening session,
Interior Minister Yosef
Burg denounced those who
demanded territorial con-
cessions of Israel.

Bob Hunter,
Community Relations Manager,
Southfield, offers you this
telephone tip:

"Two-Party Budget
Service may help you save
money on your phone bill":

Two-Party Budget Service is especially designed for people with fixed
incomes, such as retirees. For a low monthly charge' you would share
a two-party line and have an allowance of 44 local calls a month. Extra
local calls you make are only 5.10 each. This is about the lowest-cost
phone service in the -country. If you think Two-Party Budget Service
might be what you need, just call your Michigan Bell Business Office
and talk to a service representative about it.

'Plus rural zone charges where applicable.

The Jewish Information Bureau
Answering Torrent of Questions

NEW YORK — Not long
ago, when a woman in Mel-
bourne, Australia, wrote to

the "Chief Rabbi Jewish
Synagogue, New York,
U.S.A.," her letter was sent
to The Jewish Information
Bureau, 250 West 57th St.,
New York 10019.
The 45-year-old bureau
has often served as the reci-
pient for misaddressed mail
intended for various Jewish
organizations. But primar-
ily, the bureau is an all-
purpose Jewish fact-
dispensing center — possi-
bly the only one of its kind
— which acts, as well, as a
referral agency to direct the
Jewish public to Jewish
services.
As for the Australian
woman, it turned out that
she was seeking informa-
tion about her great-
grandparents, who had
come to New York City from
their native Russia at the
turn of the century. The
bureau sent her a list of the
agencies which have kept
records, over the years, of
immigrant arrivals at the
Port of New York, and the
names and addresses of lib-
raries and research
facilities.
The Jewish Informa-
tion Bureau was founded
in 1932 by its late direc-
tor, Bernard G. Richards.
The recent "Roots" phe-
nomenon, followed by
the publication of several
popular books on Jewish
genealogy, have ex-
panded a steady stream
of inquiries into a torrent.
Nobody can say for sure
what — if anything — this
will mean in the long run,
but the Bureau's present di-
rector, Judah A. Richards,
son of the founder, considers
it a promising augury.

"Maybe it's because I hear
so many scholars offering
gloomy prognostications
about the future of Diaspora
Jewry that I value the lively
counter-trends that show up
in the Bureau's mail."

Aside from an unstoppa-
ble flow of questions related
to family history, the
bureau has been receiving
an ever-increasing number
of inquiries about places of
Jewish interest around the
world.
It is not surprising that

PLO Prisoner
Gets POW Status

GENEVA (JTA) — The
International Red Cross re-
ported that Avraham Am-
ram, 28, an Israeli soldier
who was captured by ter-
rorists in south Lebanon
last month, was given the
status of prisoner of war by
his captors.

The terrorists had an-
nounced that they would
place him on trial as a war
criminal, but the Red Cross
said this will not now take
place. Following his POW
status, the Red Cross dele-
gates will be allowed to visit
him on a regular basis.
