Stereotypes By MOSHE RON The Jewish News Special Israel Correspondent TEL AVIV — Even in Is- rael a woman driver of a passenger bus is a sensa- tion. Shula Elsam from Kiryat Bialik near Haifa is one of them. She passed a test as driver and today is driving an Egged bus on the road from Tel Aviv to Haifa. Three years ago Shula's husband read in the news- papers that the Labor Ministry was looking for women drivers, as prepara- tion for times of war when men have to serve in the army. Mrs. Elsam regis- tered for a course in which 200 women took part. Only 32 finished the course. Shula Elsam was the only one to volunteer to drive an Egged bus. She started driving Egged buses in the nar- row and steep streets of Mt. Cannel in Haifa. The managers of Egged felt that she could safely drive passenger buses all over the country. Solarz said his amend- ment will cut paper work and make available to Is- rael immediately the money which the U.S. is furnishing that country in economic assistance. "We have to cut down the amount of money going into the Commodities Import Program and increase the amount going into cash," he said. "This makes more available to Israel im- mediately and also cuts down Israel's shipping costs. Instead of being re- quired to ship half on U.S. vessels, they could buy goods here and shipping costs would go down," Sol- arz said. Shula passed all the courses in spite of difficul- ties. Now she is driving a 50-passenger bus on the Tel Aviv-Haifa road. In the be- ginning, some passengers asked her, "Where is the driver? Why do we have to wait for the driver?" Some passengers even got off. Some drivers mocked her and said they keep a safe distance from her bus. But in the course of time all got accustomed to her role and people are treating her with respect. Shula has proved to be a first-class and cautious driver. Right In Your Own Driveway!
