THE DETROIT JEWISH Twenty-Five Years Since the 'Doctors' Plot': 1 Mark on Russian Map of Anti-Semitism By JERRY GOODMAN and ROBERT SPERO National Conference on Soviet Jewry (Copyright 1978, JTA, Inc.) NEW YORK — Com- munists and Czarists alike have never concealed their hatred of Jews. There has always been acute anti- Semitism in the Soviet Union. Without hesitation, with premeditated malice, the Russians have used Jews as scapegoats to camouflage the weaknesses of their respective political systems. There are many anniver- saries to mark Soviet anti- Semitism. They celebrate a wide range of intimidation and death, from trumped-up criminal charges and pog- roms to blood libels and mass murder. And every anti-Semitic anniversary, whether inscribed in his- tory books or carved on the (We're Growin g MAX BURNS TOBACCONIST A SMOKE SHOP AND MORE COMING SOON TO .,. Perhaps no anniversary has been so rooted in evil as the treacherous Doctors' Plot which was officially announced by the official Soviet government news- paper, Izvestia on Jan. 3, 1953. In an article head- lined "Spies and Murderers Masking as Scientists and Physicians," Izvestia re- ported "the arrest by the State Security Organs of a terrorist group of physi- cians who made it their aim, by means of prescribing harmful treatment, to shor- ten the lives of active lead- ers of the Soviet Union." The article amounted to a blood libel against all Soviet Jews. Izvestia continued, "The majority of the ter- rorist group — (Drs.) Vovsi, B. Kogan, Feldman, Grinshtein, Etinger and others, sold themselves body and soul to a branch of the Ameri- can intelligence — the in- ternational Jewish bourgeois-nationalist organization, the 'JOINT' (Joint Distribution Committee). Numerous irrefutable facts (which the article never reveals and which were sub- sequently never proved) have fully exposed the disgusting image of this dirty spying Zionist organization, which hides behind the mask of philanthropy. In their striving to achieve world rule, the monopolists of the U.S.A. and their British ac- complices in the aggressive imperialist camp, make use of all the most vile means and methods of undermin- ing activities. To prove their contrived theory, Izvestia and every other important Soviet journal — in remarkably identical wording which appears to be no accident — declined to pin the rap on a handful of Jewish doctors. The article was not the beginning but the climax of Jewish persecution in a period called the "Black Years" which began in 1948 and ended briefly following the death of Stalin on March 5, 1953. Long before the "Doc- tors' Plot," overt and covert anti-Semitic trends surfaced in the Soviet Union. Even dur- ing World War II, these trends were visible. They were manifested in the hardships inflicted on Jewish soldiers serving in the Red Army, and in the treatment of the Jewish masses who es- caped the Nazi invaders by moving into the inter- ior of the USSR. During the Soviet- German Treaty (1939- 1941), many Jews were ex- pelled from governmental posts, especially in the foreign office. The war against the Nazis forced the Soviets to tone down overt, official anti-Semitism, and even engage in a few ges- tures, such as the creation of the Jewish Anti-Fascistic Committee, to gain world Jewish support. But following the war, the campaign against the "Cosmopolitans" (persons without origin and home- land) intensified and served as the basis for the expul- sion of Jews from the social, political, scientific, literary and professional spheres of Soviet life. A pogrom atmosphere was created. Jews were ter- rified of venturing out of their homes. Friday, May 19, 1318 15 Baseball Star Blomberg Cited nerve-wracking suspense, the Jews were notified that the charges were cancelled. The doctors, those who were still alive, were released and their names cleared. The investigator in charge of the case, and Beria, the head of internal security, were executed. For a time the incite- ment against Jews sub- sided, and this, the most recent act of Soviet anti- Semitism, seemed only like another bad dream. But, slowly, Soviet Jews returned to the "head- lines" under different guises and under dif- ferent names: specu- lators, thieves, robbers, mohalim, rabbis, Zionists- shokhtim, nationalists. The situa- tion in the Middle East provided rich material for the Kremlin and a basis for the continuing attacks on Jews and Zionism who were por- trayed as the enemies of humanity, as the fascists had been portrayed dur- ing the war. The Doctors' Trial was a well-orchestrated plan which was to culminate in a public show trial de- picting the "crimes of the Jewish people." At the end of this trial, the doc- tors were to have been executed publicly, and the Jewish population was to have been shipped from the large urban cen- ters to the east, "to pro- tect them from the wrath of the indignant masses." It now appears that a mass destruction of Soviet Jews would have followed the staged doctor's trials. Only Stalin's sudden death on March 5, 1953, saved the Jewish people in the Soviet Union from a de- struction which undoub- tedly would have been com- parable in magnitude to the Holocaust.
