Aleksandr Pecherskiy

By LEO SCHNEIDERMAN
Aleksandr Pecherskiy
Organized his fellow-Jews
Into four combat groups
And after they had armed themselves
With seventy knives, some hatchets,
Home-made wire-cutters, and 85X rifles
Taken from the guards' quarters
On the day of the revolt, October 14, 1943,
They killed the dozen SS men
When the Germans came, one by one,
To pick up their starched uniforms
And mended boots in the workshop.
Breaking into the armory,
The prisoners slew the remaining guards
In a fire-fight
While 300 men escaped into the forest.
Two-hundred survived and linked up
With Jewish partisans in guerrilla territory
Across the Bug River,
Not far from the Sobibor death camp.
How many of these brave men
Came out alive from the war
Only God knows
Who placed His hand
Over Aleksandr Pecherskiy
And raised him from the dead.
